Paragon post!
Just dumping a few illustrations to introduce one of my favourite projects, Paragons.
It's a universe made more or less specifically to fuck with gender norms and roles, empowers women, non-binary/agender and other LGBTQ+ people.
It features Dark Souls inspired aesthetics, but is in large contrast 90 % stupid, childish comedy.
The premise is about 4 major countries more or less evenly sharing a continent. In keeping with the peace they've started an initiative, Paragons, which gathers a military representative from each country, along with a small force. Their objective is to do co-op training and missions across the continent to stabilise relations. It just so happens that each representative is a complete self-serving doofus and competent like a three year old.
I look forward to getting more into it.
You've said how magic is tied to the paragon's armour. How much does personality and mood affect their visuals/aesthetics? (If at all)
Or does it depend more on their patron/god? (Also is only deities that get paragons? Could some other powerful being be a patron?)
A Paragon's armor is heavily affected by their personality and history, but some influences from their god can remain. The exact ratio of "who you are as a person" and "what your god wants" influencing the aesthetics of the armor depends on individual piety, as Paragons don't always worship the gods who empower them (what matters is if your oath rings true to your heart, and if your goals align.)
As an example, Havedas's armor is much more inspired by his love of being an annoying clown and how he personally identifies with coyotes, then anything his god, Akdarr, wants (save for the fire and smoke that surround his Paragon abilities), while someone like Ulraste, who I still need to redraw, has her armor heavily influenced by her continued worship of the dead sun god. Savwren sits somewhere in the middle, with clear references to Imenand, but also heavily influenced by her life as a hunter and a nomad.
For now, I'm going to say that only deities get Paragons, but with the caveat that it's a matter of tradition. Theoretically, if someone went through a similar ritual and gained a similar power set, but through an oath to something that's not a god, they'd be called something else.
Nothing to see here, just graphics for a personal project
I have another question about the New Mutants/New X-Men squads: who came up with the designs for the squad outfits? Did you pitch the color schemes for each team, or was that something Marvel or the artists decided on? And if you have any sketches or early concepts, would you be able to share them?
As we recall, Randy Green did the initial costume designs. Not sure, however, how much guidance editorial gave him.
We did not pitch color schemes, but got to give feedback on everything as it came in.
And different artists were working on the books as the other (non NM and non Hellion) squads first appeared, so the artists for those issues tended to design those squads.
Here are some of the earliest designs we saw... we think some (if not all) of this was released on the web back in the day.
Not sure if that is anything new, but hope it's fun to see.
Anonymous asked:
Just to make the previous question more interesting, can you also add which design is your favorite from each squad?
Well, that is tricky. On the New Mutants it would be either Sofia (love that sash) or Laurie (love that jacket).
On the Hellions, for me (Nunzio) it would be Cessily, but that is because I love how she looks using her powers, and the costume works well for that. Christina favors Julian and his classic design.
Corsairs... not sure. Maybe Callie, but that's mostly because we wanted to do more with her and never got the chance.
Alpha Squadron... for Nunzio, it was Alani, because he loves the way the patterns of her tattoos mix with the patterns of her costume. For Christina it's Sarah, because the design really speaks to the personality we had in mind for her.
Paragons... Meghan. Just love that helmet. We never were as fond of later representations of her that got too sexualized for our tastes. To us, she was very young. And to one of our artists, her design was based on his little sister, so that was... awkward.
