Emma Frost says know your rights and don't talk to the feds!!
My Kickstarter rewards arrived - thank you @weirdefilippis! I'm looking forward to Cheating History!
To send a signed book to a fan who has supported us since our New X-Men days and has supported all of our work over the years isn’t just a pleasure, it is a responsibility we take very seriously.
Thank YOU for decades of support.
And we think you will love the podcast!
I was wondering after Surge was recently featured in Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men in Japan- were you guys planning to delve more into Noriko’s backstory?
Her relationship with her brother, mother and father was always really interesting to me!
I was also curious how she got to America- was it a situation where she just stayed in America after her visa expired, hid in a container vessel, or was it going to be darker (possible Yakuza involvement)?
Yes, we had planned to explore her backstory and family more in the future. But we hadn't plotted a specific storyline by the time we left the book, so there were no concrete plans.
We just knew that we wanted her to try and get back in touch with her little brother.
As to how she came to the United States, we actually had her try to get to the States to find the school, but then getting derailed by power overload and drug use.
We hadn't planned on Yakuza involvement, but we hadn't worked out the logistics of exactly how she came to the States, and likely would have revisited that very question in a story where she got back in touch with her family.
The other day I was wondering what might have happened if X-23 had been put on Academy X after making her comics debut in NYX, rather than being taken by Claremont on Uncanny X-Men. In particular, which of the training squads she would have been assigned to, and how that might have affected her relationships with the other New X-Men (IE, would she and Hellion have still developed their mutual crush, leading to a love triangle with Wind Dancer? Would she still have befriended Mercury and Dust? Would she still have scared the hell out of the other kids?). When I posted these musings on her subreddit, someone responded that there actually was plans for this, and that Laura would have been placed on the New Mutants squad. However, Marvel changed plans due to House of M, and New X-Men was handed over to Kyle and Yost before this could happen. The comment was unable to provide a source for this, however, only purporting it was something that came up in an interview or forum post. Is there any truth to this? Was Laura really meant to join Academy X as part of the New Mutant squad before the Decimation era shook up the X-books?
Yes, her joining the book was the plan, but no, she was not slated for the New Mutants squad, because the squads likely were on the verge of being abolished.
When we were told about House of M, we initially were asked to reshape the book, post-crossover, with fewer kids at the school.
We were asked to reduce the number of kids to under a dozen at the school. And the central kids would transition to active heroing. In that conversation, we were asked to include X-23 as one of the featured kids.
This request put to bed any of our planned miniseries for the other squads, and scrapped some of our future plans as well as meaning the end of the squad system at the school.
But it also allowed us to finally hone in on the one story we'd really been building towards - the story centered around Sean Garrison. Which meant three of the kids we'd have focused on would have to be Laurie, Josh, and Kevin. That much planned story would have taken on a frantic urgency in a "No More Mutants" world.
Key to figuring out the new version of the plans, was figuring out who else would be central to the story, and using those choices on a plotting level to shape what kids would be the center of the new incarnation of the book. This meant first and foremost, with their request, figuring out what major role to give X-23. We also knew we'd likely put some of the Hellions front and center on the heels of our Hellions miniseries (which we were writing while we got this directive).
But before our planning was done, we got a call that we were off the book, and that Marvel was opting to turn the book over to X-23's creators. Since we hadn't talked about our plans yet (and X-23's role was not yet figured on our end), it wasn't about what we had planned.
It was, as we've speculated elsewhere, much more likely the result of Marvel having run out of patience on our style of storytelling on the book.
We knew the teen-drama-with-superpowers approach was not to the liking of the powers that be. And we had tried in the HOM arc and the Hellions mini to go a little more superpowered in the storytelling to prove that we could shift gears post House Of M.
But we guess they didn't feel like taking a chance on that when the new guys had a more established track record on those types of stories, and especially with a character they wanted front and center on the book.
Not much time left for Dragon Age Day!
Hey all,
Not much time left for Dragon Age Day's Tiltify campaign. One of the prizes is a private Q & A with us!
To help raise money for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, we'll raise the stakes here:
If you support the campaign and come to our Q & A, we'll tell you what we had planned for Vaea, Francesca, Fenris, Autumn, and even Calix after Dark Fortress.
So follow the link below, and support if you can!
We give you the tools to engage with your donors and raise more for your charity
Hi! I’m Nathaly. I’ve been meaning to send this letter to you for quite a while now. Months, maybe years! And I finally got the courage to write it, let alone send it, haha.
I’m from Venezuela. By now maybe you can assume what I wanna talk about, and it’s my favorite character ever, Sofía. I found out about her in 2016, way after she was first introduced to fans in 2003 (I was born in 2002, so I was very oblivious of her story as a kid). I don’t quite remember how, but I can only believe that it was from a conversation with a friend about the lack of venezuelan representation in media.
But Wind Dancer existed, and she might be the first example I was given back then. So I started reading about her on Wikipedia, then I found comics on the internet and read them all multiple times. I was very invested in her story, I still am. And looking back at the topic of representation, I consider her the most accurate example as to what venezuelans are known for.
Sofía faces loss at a very young age, losing her mom should’ve hit hard for her and on top of that, she has to confront the fact that she needs to leave her country to live with her father. It’s quite terrifying, changing scenery and dealing with grief at the same time as dealing with discrimination at school. It was quite soon to tell, but many venezuelans have dealt with the same fate in recent years, leaving their country to political violence in search of better opportunities, missing their loved ones and adapting to their new routine.
I wish more people knew about her. I wish her character were a recurrent one in recent comics and I know that maybe right now that's not your call to make. But I wanted you to know that people still look up to her. Still wait for her comeback. Hell, I cried when she came back in X-Factor. She’s my favorite. And I wanted to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for creating her.
I don’t have questions about her now, or maybe I have too much that I don’t know how to phrase them. But I wish I could at least make you smile letting you know how much she means to me. I actually wanted to buy the comics online somewhere, but they’re too expensive for me. If I buy them maybe I’ll let you know haha.
Again, thank you so much.
Thank you so much Nathaly!
This made our day when we first read it, and made our day again today when we sat down to answer some questions.
It is sadly not up to us to see Sofia get more attention in the comics, but we would love to see that too. She remains a favorite of ours, from all the characters we've created, X-Men or otherwise.
And if you send a direct message with an address, we can send you an issue with her, signed. Your message really does mean the world to us.
Hi there! Your work has had such a huge impact on my life - from the Academy X stuff to the Dragon Age stories. Thank you for being the powerhouse creators you are and being such inspirations. I have the world's silliest question about the Academy X characters and the information in some of the lore books that may have been pulled from someone's RP account. Was Elixir meant to be an only child or did he have brothers?
We wrote him as an only child. If we'd have planned him having a sibling, we would have had him mention it, like we did with Noriko, or even shown the sibling, like we did with David.
But since we never really stated he was an only child in the book, we suppose others could create a sibling, as long as the relationship was such that it justified never mentioning that sibling when Josh was talking about his parents refusing to speak with him.
Hi! First I want to say Academy X was my jumping in point with comics- it's been so long I don't remember why or how I found it, but even now years later the Academy X kids are extremely near and dear to my heart. Josh Foley is especially one of my top 5 comic characters, period. His desire to fit in and be liked leading him down questionable paths and bad choices made for a wonderful character. You said your original intention was for him to go bad- can you expand further on those ideas?
Originally we had planned a flip between Elixir and Wither. Josh would start with a heroic power and become evil, and Kevin would start with a villainous power and become a hero.
We'd intended for Josh to fall in with Sean Garrison's mutant supremacy, and (with his Omega-level powers) become Garrison’s weapon in an attempt to pull off what Magneto tried in the first X-Men movie - to make everyone a mutant.
But then we changed Josh's origin issue. We had him start in a hate group. And we knew that while he could (and did) screw up again, we wanted no part of him actually becoming a villain. His launching point meant he had to have a redemptive arc, and we started him down that path, but left him immature and emotional enough that he could be tempted by Garrison's scheme when that would come to a head.
And that second version is what we had planned to start right about when we left the book. It would've had Josh being tempted to use his powers in the way that Garrison wanted, but being talked out of it by Kevin, allowing Kevin's heroic side to shine and help facilitate the final stages of Josh's redemption.
Are you ever planning to return to X-Men and do something with the New Mutants? Preferably including Wind Dancer? She’s my fave. I've honestly had a crush on her since middle school!
We would happily return if Marvel wanted us. We don't suspect they want that, though. And, to be fair, we haven't been knocking on their door either, as our work has taken us down other roads for the time being.
But we'd love another crack at those kids, and especially at Sofia.

KNIGHT ERRANT GOOD!!
Dragon Age Day 2025
Happy Dragon Age Day!
We're again teaming with the Unofficial Dragon Age Day to raise some money, this time for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.
We're offering to send signed Dragon Age Comics, and we're doing a virtual Q & A.
Please check it out on Tiltify:
https://tiltify.com/+2025-dragon-age-day/2025-unofficial-dragon-age-day
And support if you can. We promise to answer any questions thrown our way in this Q & A. Okay, maybe not ANY questions. But questions about our comic run, about Autumn, and about what our plans would have been for future adventures of Vaea and company? Totally answerable!
CHEATING HISTORY - funded!
Nunzio here. Christina and I both teach, but I also am Chair of multiple departments and a Dean at our school. Finding the time to write is not as easy as I'd want.
To be honest, when Dragon Age: Dark Fortress ended, I worried how often I would write again. Finding people to hire you to write is sometimes a job unto itself, and I had so many.
But we teach our students to create their own work. So we decided to do the same.
Christina and I teamed up with Jenny Sterner to create a pilot for a Podcast called CHEATING HISTORY. And we assembled an amazing team, and created a pilot.
And then we put it out in the world and asked for funding to make an entire season. In this economy, we knew it was a lot to ask.
But we got the support, and Season One is going to happen!
We have stretch goals, so if you haven't supported us, please do at Kickstarter:
A narrative podcast
Those stretch goals include artwork by Emma Vieceli, and Fernando Heinz Furukawa, both of whom we'd be thrilled to work with again.
So please check it out if you can.
But whatever happens, we are going to make a full season of this podcast.
No idea how I'm gonna fit it into the teaching/chairing/deaning schedule. But that's just logistics.
This is going to be fun.
I read all of the published da comics yesterday (thank you to my public library for having them!!) and OH MY GOD VAEA <3
Pretty elf girl with a great backstory and an S-tier personality! Put her in Veilguard and I'm not joking
CHEATING HISTORY - Raising the Stakes
We have very little time left for crowdfunding - our Kickstarter campaign runs until the end of the day on Monday October 20th.
So we're raising the stakes:
Please support us. We also have signed books as add ons that can be bought by anyone who pledges any level of support. Books signed by us, and some signed by Greg Rucka.

Just putting this back out into the world. 40 hours left, and we have a little bit more to go, funding-wise. But we're close to getting a full season of our podcast.
Also, if it helps... exactly 0% of this podcast uses AI. Even the AI voice in the show is a human being (our amazing co-creator Jenny Sterner).

CHEATING HISTORY - and signed books!
Hello all.
If you're a fan of our DRAGON AGE comics, or of our NEW X-MEN work, or of any of our work, please check out our Kickstarter for our new narrative Podcast, CHEATING HISTORY. It's a time-travel story involving people who disappeared throughout history being brought forward in time to save the future.
We have put up some of our comics as add-ons. Meaning, if you support the Kickstarter (no minimum level required) you can add on a signed copy of some of our DRAGON AGE books, or a NEW X-MEN books. One is even co-signed by Greg Rucka! The cost of these books would be added to your pledge, so it would all count towards the project being funded.
Basically a win-win!
Please check out and support our Kickstarter before October 21st.
