I just pissed off Ash.

But it's not my fault she mistakenly assumed that getting her grades up by mid-terms would get her off restriction. Three grades dropped, and one of those was a two-full-grade (+) downward slide. She can continue to stay home after school on weekdays until the next report card comes out and we see just how important it is to her. I promise she'll live.

Proud Parenting Moments

Today, we asked our 12-year-old son if he would like to join us for the Science March in April. After answering a few of his questions (”Why are they marching?”) his response was, “Heck yes! And I am going to make a sign and put 4 months of work into it even though the march is only 2 months away! And I am starting today!”

We were in Chicago for the Women’s March (by coincidence, it was originally a trip to see Hamilton and do touristy things) and our son was so impressed by what he saw. He was taking photos and videos with his phone and was so happy to see so many people gathered for a cause.

Also, today our son is going to color his hair pink to show support for his math teacher who was very recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  

Though these days feel very, very dark, kids like my son give me hope.

Too tired to be 'present' for your toddler/young kid?

Sometimes it's tough to be constantly ON while having a toddler or young kid. They need lots of stimulation and new experiences and it can be overwhelming to keep up with your own self care while keeping up with what they need. Here are a few things that I do to keep my kid busy when I need to step back and do something for myself. Admittedly a lot of these involve the bathtub. It's a good contained space that can easily be cleaned up quickly. You know where they are! -finger paints in the bathtub -shaving cream painting in the bathtub -glow sticks in the bedroom while you lie down with the door closed and lights off (this is nice if I have a migraine) -glow sticks in the tub (toss them in and turn out the lights! You have to stay right there but it's a guaranteed 30 minutes of giggling and happy toddler) -measuring cups and measuring spoons in the bathtub with colored water in the cups (this is a weird one but it's never failed) -cups and spoons to dig in sand or dry rice in a bin, we do this in the grass outside so I don't have to clean anything up Seriously lazy parenting and I get a lot of stuff at the dollar store for her to play with. They have cans of shaving cream and one lasts us a few months of play.

I did it! I survived hosting 15 seven year old girls in my house for my daughter’s birthday.  The party was a hit!  We watched Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 1997 classic Cinderella. Then we played some games, coloured in some pictures and ate cake. I followed an Online tutorial to make this princess pull apart cake and I nailed it.  

 My daughter was so happy and she told me this was the best party ever!!!!

My child hates it when I make bad puns using One Direction song titles so I decided to start quoting Harry Potter movie lines to her. I had to open a bottle of water for her yesterday because she couldn't open it. I told her she was weak and would never know love or friendship and i felt sorry for her.

I’m in a coffeeshop, and a mom and her little kid (under 2 years old) come in.

The kid totters along, trips over his feet, falls on the floor, and wails sadly.

Mom: Guess you shouldn’t have had whiskey with breakfast!

I have a new personal hero.

Me: *trips over a basket, scattering her possessions everywhere*

Mom: ... But you are fucking clumsy.
