#parenting question

Genuinely curious what other people think about this. You won't change my mind about my own parenting, but wondering if I'm in the minority:

Conversing with a friend who was gushing about how great her daughter's (14yo) new bball coach was. "He even texted her to ask how her first day of high school went....and texted her on her birthday." Alarm bells immediately went off in my head. So I asked if it was a text chain with her (the mom)....she said no. And I asked if she thought that was appropriate. She immediately got all defensive and of course everything was fine, great, normal....all kids and coaches text in the sports world. ( As if my kids don't play sports.) I assured her we didnt have to agree, but that seemed odd to me and that I've been involved with more than one organization where it's strictly prohibited for an adult to communicate with a minor without a 3rd party present (in person, phone call, email, text, etc.). In my opinion this should be standard practice. Again she got all defensive blah blah blah and I just let the topic drop.

Anyway, just curious if I'm being extra paranoid or what the general consensus is. Feel free to reblog to widen the net 😉

Legit parenting question. 

We let our kids watch Bob’s Burgers (as of like, a week ago) and I’m dying to rewatch Tuca and Bertie, since it’s been canceled. I know it’s a firmly adult show, but it wouldn’t be too traumatic, right? The adult stuff is so adult it would go over the head, and the silly stuff is so silly. I mean, they’ve seen Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Over the Garden Wall, and the daytime stuff on cartoon network they watched while on vacation is deeply, deeply weird these days. IDK.

I was talking to the pharmacist today about my medicine.

I told her I was trying to have a baby and she mentioned vaccines. Like flu and another one. I can't have the flu (last time it put me in the hospital because I couldn't breathe) and she mentioned a pnuemonia one and tetinus.

I'm just wondering if other people who have planned children have gotten these vaccines before hand?

Question

So I am godmother to 3 kids, ages 5 and 6. Now they all grew up watching TV shows like the Walking Dead and Supernatural and their grandmother wasn't the type to keep her TV viewing age appropriate and watched movies with gang violence, murders, and horror ( like those Asian horror movies that are terrifying and the cheap scare movies we Americans sometimes make to Hollywood horror films) and well, I've heard good things about Netflix's Stranger Things and began watching it with them. Safe to say, the moment their mothers saw kissing happening and drinking, they forbade me from letting me see it. This is before the end of episode 2. I'm the type of person to pause and ask them if they're okay and if they understand what is happening. And also making sure they understand that certain actions the kids make on the show are not acceptable and why along with the probable consequences. They also understand that this is all make believe and what happens on the show doesn't mean it will happen like that in real life.

Now my question is for the people who have watched this show from beginning to end. Is this show really inappropriate for these kids? More so than the Walking Dead or Supernatural (as those are the only shows I can confirm they've watched with 100% accuracy) ?

I know I should listen to their parents request to not show them the show, easier to acquiesce, but the kids loved the show and are eager to know where Will is and how Eleven got her powers and what the monster is. They're really bummed they can't watch it.

I'm prepared to argue for the series but, I'm also prepared to find the children something else to watch. (Also, they watched IT from the 1990s or whatever time it came out). I can't make this decision myself as I have a vastly different parenting style than they do. (I personally wouldn't have let them watch the Walking Dead in the beginning but hey they watched that so I figured why not Stranger things right?)

Their reasoning was that murder and death is totally different from kissing and drinking (saying that that was a gateway to worse things).

I was honestly floored by that logic but whatever.

Question For Other Cloth Diapering Parents

I am about to have my second child and this will be my first time using cloth diapers. I am having a hospital birth and am curious what other cloth diapering parents did as far as the hospital goes. Should I take diapers and a wet bag? Diapers and biodegradable disposable inserts? Just buy some organic diapers? Just use what the hospital supplies? I keep cycling through the different options and landing on a different answer every time. What did you do? How did it go? Thanks!

Question Time!

At what age did you learn your address and phone number?  Parents, do your kids know their address and/or phone number?

I knew my mom’s address and phone number at age 5.  I knew my dad’s address and phone number by about age 7, when he bought a house instead of doing 6-month apartment leases.  Liz knew my address and phone number, and Dad’s address and phone number, at age 4.  I drilled that stuff into her head with rhymes and mnemonics and even a rendition of the goddamn Can-Can, because of my time as an emergency medical dispatcher.  My 6-year-old nephew and 4-year-old niece don’t know their address and phone number yet, but they don’t go anywhere without their mom, dad, or me, either.

Late night thoughts

Every now and again I'll be hanging out with M and get a feeling like I am waiting for someone to come and get him, like I am just temporarily taking care of him. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy like nothing else and am amazingly thankful that I get to be his mom. It is also not a fear about B ever trying to take him back, she seems so at peace with her decision.

It is more like I cannot believe that this amazing little guy is my son, that I get to take care of him and support him until he is old enough to decide to be on his own. I love him more than I have ever loved anyone, and I am never going to stop loving him like that. But somewhere in the back of my mind is the feeling that I am temporary. Is this a common thing for parents of children through adoption, or even for parents of biological kids? Does this feeling fade, or is it like that reocurring nightmare of realizing it is finals week and you suddenly remember you have a class you have never attended?
