Since you like memoirs, I will recommend Paris-Underground by Etta Shiber. I read it years ago and enjoyed it very much. It's a nonfiction World War II memoir published during World War II. The author was an ordinary American woman living with her English friend in France when the war broke out. They decided they couldn't just do nothing, and they began helping soldiers get out of the country. The author sees her friend as very brave and herself as very timid, but in reality, they were both incredibly courageous, and they paid a high price for their compassion and daring.
