Wisconsin Republicans impose their Will on rest of the State
Wisconsin Republican state lawmakers have just passed a bill that would ban local governments, be it counties, cities or towns, from requiring contractors that choose to work on taxpayer funded projects, to follow project labor agreements. These agreements deal with requirements for the contractor, again who chooses to work/ bid on a particular project, to work with unions or union workers.
Now, I understand some people don't like unions, though the middle class in America was built on the backs of union membership, but that shouldn't be an issue for state politicians. If a project isn't receiving state funding than it is absurd for state politicians to dictate to local governments & residents, how they can spend their local tax-dollars.
If the residents of a town or city, be it Milwaukee, Oshkosh or South Milwaukee don't like how these dollars are spent, they can always vote those officials out. In the 2016 election cycle over $800,000 in political contributions was given from construction related interests to the campaigns (directly or indirectly) of Wisconsin state legislative candidates.
How well this $800,000 was leveraged by construction interests to get politicians to vote to gut pro-union agreements, it is impossible to say, but it would be folly, I believe, to say it had no effect. Republicans frequently talk about states' rights but seem to want to overturn decisions by local governments. This is one of the worst abuses I have ever seen & the politicians who voted for it should be ashamed. This is not the only shameful act of state politicians.
Another & even worse case was concerning an out of state paint manufacturer from New Hampshire who gave $750,000 to a Wisconsin group that ran ads in support of many of these same legislators. This paint maker after the victory of these candidates, received retroactive immunity (by many of the same Wisconsin lawmakers it helped win) for legal liability from lead poisoning.
Lead poisoning, especially from lead paint, continues to harm children in Wisconsin to today. If these are our state leaders, we can and should do better come the next elections.
