One young female homemaker's story is revealing. When walking downtown, holding her sleeping baby, at a time of the day when many men were on the streets, the diaper bag opened "and all the things fell out". Yet, she noted with growing desparation, "no man offered to help me, (none) even seemed to look at me, so I started to outright ask. The men refused. I was amazed. At last, a woman came by. She helped me, wouldn't you know." More than one woman mentioned that other women comprised a dependable class on whom they could rely; refusals from men deepened their cynisim.
