For: @reiremington (past thread - set just after Eiji’s 21st birthday)
Eiji felt like he had been waiting for his powers to arrive his entire life. It had been the focus for so long, it felt like the most important thing on earth. It seemed like their father wanted it so desperately, every passing day felt like the deafening tick of a clock, bringing him closer and closer to the edge. He thought his powers would come, that they were just late and when they finally did arrive the entire coven would stop looking at him the way they had been recently— like a disappointment—that their fathers intensity would relent before it gave way into something else entirely. Eiji wouldn’t have minded that. He could handle needing to catch up in order to be the future coven leader that their father always wanted. He would have worked hard to be everything he wanted.
But it didn’t happen. His 21st birthday was joyless. The morning had been full of dread. Everyone knew if if hadn’t happened now, it never would. Ever. He was a human in one of the most powerful covens in the city. The day’s passed and the immediate switch in his father felt evident to him, like the moment he’d had his confirmation that Eiji wasn’t who he wanted him to be, it had been enough to cast him aside. His attention on Rei felt immediate and Eiji felt like he might as well have been invisible.
When the invite to go out on a night out with his friends came along, he eagerly accepted. It wasn’t as though anyone was going to notice he was gone, anyway. Even if he did something really stupid, was he even really a Remington anyway? Did it matter what he did now?
When he came back home in the early hours of the next morning he was stumbling and still very much intoxicated. He fumbled around in the cupboards of their large kitchen to find a glass to fill with water. The room was spinning from how much he had drank, his throat was dry from cigarettes and his body ached from a haphazard hook-up, and he gripped onto the sink.
