F I R S T T I M E L I N E –
every waking morning feels a little bit more ominous, brings the ever present threat of death that much closer, and hongbin can’t tell if he’s feeling suffocated or relieved. on one hand, it’s almost pathetic, to crave the end of a battle with no end in sight through death, when he himself deals so closely with it.
frankly, hongbin is exhausted. he feels stretched thin- weary and unsure. he can feel the result of jinil overworking himself in his own limbs, can feel the way it drains him emotionally, mentally. it’s almost too much.
almost.
were hongbin a lesser man, he may have complained. he may have bitched and whined and attempted to fight jinil to keep them safe- or at least to keep his hero from charging into his death. he knows though, in his heart of hearts, that it would be more cruel to fight jinil on his convictions than it would be to watch him die. at the very least, this way hongbin knows that whether jinil looks back or not, whether he realizes it or not, he has someone who will fight beside him until his last breath.
(in another life, maybe things would have been different. maybe hongbin would have been able to convince jinil that some things are not worth dying for recklessly, that rushing in is not always the answer. then again, in another life, maybe his heart wouldn’t ache with longing every time they brushed shoulders, and maybe his breath wouldn’t catch in his throat when they made eye contact.
but life does not offer do-overs, and she is not kind to those who fate has long since cast judgement on.)
he knows this. hongbin knows it, and yet, he follows jinil still- willingly, in spite of their bond. truth be told, he would follow jinil to the end of the earth for his own loyalty and nothing more. he has become a soldier for his captor, without regret, without hesitation. because of this, even though he’s tired, even though he’s weary- he carries on. into today’s battle. into tomorrows, should they be lucky enough to see another sunrise.
“our numbers keep dwindling,” hongbin rasps, chancing a glance at jinil’s ever stoic profile. he feels calmer when he watches jinil. it’s almost enough to quiet the storminess in his mind, the static mixture between his own feelings and those of his captor. “we probably won’t make it out of this alive, but at least we can drag some of these motherfuckers down with us.”

A more detailed timeline of events from the show (S1-S3): [x]
Mycroft was an MI6 field agent from the ages of 18-26 (though we was training or under supervision for the first two years of that). He knew that he would not enjoy field work (and he never did) but he went into the job to build his contacts, and because he knew it would be easily to gain a reputation as somebody that should not be crossed through his actions there than if he were sat behind a desk all day.
Mycroft’s past romantic partners:
Peter Maddock
Mycroft and Peter first met while Mycroft was completing his training to be an MI6 field agent. Peter was older and already rather successful in his job, and he took a liking to Mycroft. This liking only grew as he was asked to supervise the younger man's work. It took a year of flirting for Mycroft, 20 at this point, to finally catch on to what was happening and - after ensuring that the other could be discrete - pluck up the bravery to reciprocate.
The relationship was one of infatuation, not love. It didn’t end well. Peter was very sexually driven, Mycroft was not. Within months, this frustrated Peter enough that he cheated. Mycroft knew the second he next saw the other man, but he did not comment on it. Instead, he tried to desperately hold onto the relationship for a couple more months before he eventually worked out that it was best to end it.
Peter is still a field agent, though he’s nearing an age now where he is starting to consider stepping back from active duty. He’s is, and always has been, very good at his job. Though he did manage to hold a few stable relationships in his life, he mainly has a reputation as a flirt who doesn’t settle down. Mycroft hasn’t talked to him in while - thankfully, none of his work crossing over with Peter’s in recent years.
Thomas Dymock
Thomas worked with equipment for field agents. Mycroft met him when he was 22 and was instantly drawn in by the other’s smile, Mycroft found himself making excuses to go and talk to him during work hours before, eventually, Thomas asked if he wanted to get a drink.
It was love. The relationship was serious (though, as with Peter, a secret to all but those involved) and lasted around a year.Eventually, Thomas had had enough of being put behind Mycroft’s work. He wanted a relationship - not to just be a secret that only got attention when the office wasn’t busy. Mycroft was heartbroken and very upset.
Nowadays, Thomas is happily married. He has a loving wife and two children, and still holds the same job (though he has been promoted since the time he was dating Mycroft). If they pass each other in the hallway, Mycroft and Thomas say hello to each other and, if there’s a spare moment, ask how they are doing. Thomas feels a little sorry for Mycroft. Having known the man well, he can see that he is lonely. There is nothing that he can do about it, though, and he knows full well that Mycroft would not take well to being given advice about his love life.
👀 but for lil Mycroft
Send 👀 for a headcanon about a behaviour my muse has that displays their thoughts and/or emotions!
Mycroft's concept of personal space is not the best. Most of the time, this isn't noticeable because he also generally dislikes being physically close to people. However, when he's curious about something that all goes out the window, and suddenly he's completely ignoring how close he is to somebody in favour of getting a closer look at whatever's caught his eye. The same goes for when he's excited about something, but that's a lot less frequent than his curiosity.
As he grows older, he learns to control his behaviour even more than he already does as a child, so this happens far less. There is still the chance of it occurring, though, in the rare moments where he's both relaxed and truly comfortable with somebody.
