           he knows he fucked up the minute he said it. she’s not an easy woman by any means. he likes that about her. how she can make the simplest of things so complicated. only time when things aren’t is when they’re fucking and he’s pretty much putty for her. something he holds no shame in. only he can be just as abrasive as she is. life so different but so the same. the issues with her father he doesn’t understand the total complexity of but given he attended the funeral of his father to only stay along enough for his sister to not punch him says a lot about him. like the fact that he has a mile long list of DADDY ISSUES  that make themselves known at all the wrong times. 

he owns his inability to care with a sense of pride though. not bothering with the man that did nothing but berate him for all the wrong reasons. he joined the military to escape only to wind up scarred and even more fucked up. the tattoos he collects do nothing to hide the marks. not really. not when he can close his eyes and know that they are there. it matters not as he hears the scrape of the chair and sees the way she walks off. eyes roll immediately because of course she gets up. it’s exactly what he would do. RUN. he looks down at the paper before tossing it across the table. men aren’t worth it. even if he is a man. 

maybe he should have given her space but he’s not that type. he can be pushy when he wants to be even though he shuts down entirely when his own feelings are the subject at hand. doesn’t take much for him to find her, moving in front of her, walking backwards in hopes he doesn’t run into something. she wouldn’t tell him if he was. “c’mon, love. i can see how pissed you are. no worries i can take it.” and maybe he is goading her. to see if she’ll yell or hit him. “daddy dearest is six feet under. trust me, the old man doesn’t care if you wallow or you piss on his grave.”

They’ve gone on runs together since pretty much day one. Every morning by 6am at the latest (except on weekends or mornings when heavy drinking took place the night before) they run. While everyone has kept relatively active, they’re the most committed to it. If you’re going to sit on your ass all day and night playing games, then you’re going to work for it.

She trusted him almost immediately with the budget and getting food, snacks, booze, etc. Jake has always been used to handling the finances, so his handling keeping items stocked was no issue. When it became an issue, he either replenished the fund or put a few items given by promoters onto eBay.

003.

Jake and Carolina first get close on the night of the bad burritos. Everyone had eaten that night at the less than savory Taco Hell down the block. It was known for being low quality, not like the much cleaner and nicer one up the street. But they were drunk, hungry, and in a few cases stoned. So they ate.

And feast they did. Until about three hours later when everyone had either gone to bed, wound up in the bushes, the bathroom, or in one case hunched over the kitchen garbage. They two of them however had unluckily both run for the bathroom upstairs.

Nothing says friendship like holding back someones hair while they puke into a toilet and then projectile vomiting all over the back of their head while you almost shit your pants.

Things can get messed up in a house with gamers. Like really messed up. Late nights. Partying. Sex. Booze. Occasional recreational drugs. 

But blacking out drunk is pretty commonplace.

What isn’t commonplace is waking up on the floor of your friend’s room with a children’s storybook in one hand and a now empty beer in the other as they sleep peacefully, all propped up. Honestly, why did it have to be Good Night Moon?

Whatever they did last night that prompted a bed time story, he really doesn’t want to ever know.

     Shortly after the Pelican landed safely back in the godforsaken jungle canyon he and the Sim Troopers had been trapped in for far too long, the one he’d hoped he’d never have to see again, Wash set his focus on making sure that everyone was okay. This had naturally started with him checking in on the Reds and Blues, and he discovered that they were, thankfully, all unscathed. With that out of the way, he could turn his attention to the other person he was worried over -- Carolina.

She hadn’t appeared too injured when she’d showed up and they put an end to the Sharkface problem, and she’d been able to use the bubble shield to protect all of them on their escape, but... Carolina was tough. She could be injured and not showing it, and no doubt she had to be exhausted. A fight with that ridiculous pyromaniac and then using one of her armour enhancements so soon afterwards had to have taken a lot out of her. And chances were that she wasn’t resting. They shared that stubborn trait when it came to taking a break to recover, only Wash wouldn’t stand for her avoiding it if he had any say in the matter.

     “Carolina,” he greeted as he came up behind her, having left the Reds and Blues behind a few minutes ago to search for her. Thankfully, she was alone, and Epsilon was likely still out of commission after running the bubble shield... That meant that for the first time since she’d found him and the others, they actually had a chance to talk undisturbed. That... added a layer of anxiety to the whole thing -- they hadn’t seriously talked about anything aside from the missions they’d been on since she’d found him -- but Wash tried to shake that off and focus on the matter at hand.

     “How’re you holding up?” Though he still wore his helmet, his gaze was sharp through his visor, watching her every movement, prepared to catch any sign of a lie if she were to tell him that she was perfectly fine. That was the answer he was expecting, but he wasn’t going to buy it. “Epsilon still offline?”
