Oh, Phil loved his little assistant. You were so cute that he could never get mad at you, even when you messed up his schedule. He loved that your work suits were always in his company colors. He loved that you always asked him what he thought of things. He loved that you were scared of his men and always stuck to him as much as possible. Granted, he had given orders to a few of his men to scare you back to him when you strayed a little too far but he figured that it was for the greater good. It was an extra grand in each of their pockets and it was a small price to pay to have his favorite employee following him around like a duckling would with its mother.
It was like a constant “Take Your Kid To Work Day” for him. He was always happy to have you around and he loved being able to have you near him. He had you come to the grocery store with him after his work day was over and had you go over his schedule for the next day for him while he cooked you both dinner. He liked your company and it made his massive house significantly less lonely. The only thing that he didn’t like was when you would politely refuse the guest room that he offered to let you stay in.
Ever since his ex wife left him, he had become very cautious about his personal relationships. However, the first time you came to him on the brink of tears after doublebooking him for meetings, that caution went out the window. You didn’t know how to use the software and you were only trying to do a good job. You didn’t want anything that you hadn’t earned and you only wanted to help him with his duties. You were so young and he’d just have to teach you how to do things properly.
He had taken you under his wing after that first mess up and had patiently explained everything that you would need to know. He thought it was fun to give you pop quizzes and ask you how to do certain tasks like book appointments. You had admitted to him that it helped you stay sharp and he was very happy with that.
You had moved across the country to work for Shadow Company and it was something that he was secretly very pleased about. He didn’t have to isolate you when you had already done it yourself. Whenever there was something that you didn’t know how to do, you called him and he would fix it for you. Whether it was a popped tire when you didn’t know where your spare was, a problem with your neighbors in the apartment above yours keeping you up at night, or asking if you left your work laptop in his office, he always made the time to either fix the problem personally or send his most qualified men to take care of it for him.
He wasn’t truly delusional in the sense that he knew where he stood with you. He knew that he wasn’t actually your father and he knew that you didn’t share any blood. He knew that he was just your boss and that you only stuck around because you needed a paycheck. He had just desperately wanted a kid for so long that he would take whatever he could get. It was actually the reason why his ex wife had left him. She hadn’t wanted kids and he absolutely did. It was a major point of contention for the five years that the marriage lasted. He would always throw massive barbecues for the company at what was then their shared house and dote on every single child that his employees brought, giving them goodie bags and enough sugar to make them put the Energizer bunny to shame. Some soldiers even brought their kids’ friends to get even further into his good graces. Upon further reflection after the messy divorce, he realized that he probably should have asked her how many babies she wanted when they were dating.
None of that stopped him from basically hauling you around wherever he went. You weren’t allowed on missions with him but you were kept comfortably on whatever base the company was using so that you could greet him when he came back. As time went on, you became more of an emotional support employee than an actual personal assistant. Graves would have one of his soldiers handle his schedule while you were busy either listening to him talk about anything and everything or sitting next to him at meetings and trying your best to take notes on subjects that you had no clue about.
At one point, he decided to redo the decorations and do some renovations in his house. He was tired of reminders of his failed marriage and he was excited for his house to have a new look. He ended up going a bit more crazy than he thought he would. He had you help him pick new hardwood floors, a different carpet, and new paint colors. He had the guest room painted your very favorite color. It was an incredibly lengthy process but it ended up working out well. The house looked even better than before and Phil was looking forward to showing it off at his next house party.
Once the renovations were finally done, he happily prepared for the party. He had decided that it would be another barbecue and that he would host one of his teams that had done extremely well on the latest mission. He left early on Friday before the party to cook and make sure that everything would be perfect. He had you help him make salads and marinate the ribs that he would be grilling. He even showed you how to make his mom’s potato salad recipe, the ultimate family bonding experience.
After spending most of the Saturday grilling meat, day drinking, and making sure that you, his team, their spouses, and their kids all had enough to eat, Phil finally sat down on his patio chair next to you with a grunt. He had a plate filled with every single type of food that he had on offer and he seemed pretty content.
“You know, I hate how far away you live from headquarters. You should live on base like the rest of us. It would reduce carbon emissions and all that. I know you’re big on the environment, kiddo.” He said lightly before taking a bite out of the meat on one of the ribs on his plate. He was thrilled at the way it was almost falling off the bone. It was yet another mission success.
You paused. You were in the middle of chewing and weren’t in any way prepared to respond to his words. It wasn’t the first time that he had mentioned moving you onto base with him and the rest of the company. You knew that he was fond of you but he was the only one who knew how deep that affection ran.
“It doesn’t have to be immediately or anything like that. It’s just that once you do, I’ll double your salary.” He continues. It was clear that he had been thinking about it for a while and that the money was nothing to him.
“Is there even any housing left on base…? Like, I’m willing to do it but I don’t know if there’d be any room for me.” You asked quietly. You weren’t stupid. It was an insane increase to your already very healthy salary and you weren’t about to shoot down your boss’s idea after he had always been so nice to you.
“You can stay with me until we find somewhere better to put you. You don’t mind using one of the guest rooms, right? You won’t have to buy groceries, at least. You can raid the fridge whenever you want and you already know that my home is your home.” He says faux thoughtfully. He didn’t have any intentions of finding you a different place to stay. He knew for a fact that his house was the best place for you so he wasn’t technically lying. He knew that he was the best person to take care of you and that he could keep you happy.
You hesitate again. You wanted that raise and you trusted your boss. You had stayed at his house before after drinking a little more than you should have during a few of his parties. You had slept in the guest room that he always offered you and he was so happy to make breakfast to help you soothe your hangover that morning. You knew that he loved having you over and cooking for you. You figured that he was probably just lonely. After a moment of thought, you nodded.
“Sure. I can do that.”
It was an easy decision. Shadow Company, despite the ethical and moral compromises that you had to make to work there, had amazing benefits and you were already on track in your savings to buy a house for yourself. With double the salary, you could probably even retire early. Phil had insisted that you use the services of one of the financial planners that worked to help the soldiers make good decisions. It was free so you didn’t mind making an appointment. Phil was happy to be able to check through all of your financial information that you provided to the planner. Of course, he could have looked through your information earlier in the complete file that he had his intel workers pull but it felt better for him to have you somewhat freely give up the information to him.
Phil was a patient man. He didn’t mind sending you the new contract with his offer in writing. He was happy to cover the cost of you breaking your lease. He took his time when he helped you pack your things from your small apartment. He was careful when he carried the boxes and furniture to the moving truck with the help of some of his men. He made sure not to press you when he knocked on your new room’s door to get you for your first dinner together as a family. Of course, you didn’t know that it was really your new room or that you were family now but that would come later. He loved how casual you looked in your civilian clothes, eating delivery pizza on his couch with him. He truly enjoyed sitting around with you, chatting and joking about anything and everything. He knew that you were comfortable around him. He was always acting like a good father should.
Phil was happy to dote on you the entire time that you were settling in. He made the foods you like and made sure to pack matching lunches for you both during the work week for days that you two weren't getting delivery or catering. When there was a meeting with a potential client at a resort, he made sure that you both had matching Hawaiian shirts. He joked around with the client after they sealed the deal and was perfectly happy to talk all about fatherhood with the other man. He didn't feel the need to tell him that you didn't know that you were his kid now.
He didn't like it when you tried to have any independence. When you requested to use one of your vacation days to go on a mini road trip with one of your friends, he almost flipped his lid. The idea that you would intentionally leave to hang out with someone who hadn’t bothered to come see you in months, someone who wasn’t taking care of you at all, was unacceptable to him. He approved the vacation time as soon as you asked but when you went to book hotel rooms and buy tickets for activities, there weren’t any openings. When you finally found an open hotel room, it was almost a grand over your budget for the entire trip. To make matters worse, your friend never sent you the money that they agreed to send you and hadn’t responded to any of your messages. You told Phil about your troubles during dinner that night. He seemed very sympathetic as he patted your back and reassured you that you could always go some other time. If you had looked up at him while he spoke, you would’ve seen the victorious gleam in his eyes.
You ended up still taking that day off. Instead of going anywhere fun though, you took the opportunity to laze around the house and take a nap. It was your boss’s ideal situation. Even though you weren’t next to him at all times like you usually were, you were getting some well needed down time and he could easily supervise you with all of the cameras in his house. He enjoyed being able to listen to you complain to the TV about the choices of some people on the reality show that you were watching. You ate the leftovers from the dinner that he had made you the night before for lunch and you snacked on some of the chips and veggies that he had stocked up on just for you.
When Phil got home that night, you were still snuggled up on the couch watching a movie. He smiled at you as he approached you, sitting down beside you and patting you on the top of the head.
“How's my favorite employee? You look nice and cozy, kid. Did you get some nice rest?” He practically cooed at you as he looked down at you.
“I'm alright, Phil. I'm just a bit bummed out about the whole vacation thing. I got lots of rest though so thanks for still letting me have the time off.” You responded quietly.
“Of course! Anything for you. You're such a good assistant and I don't want you to burn out. You should take the next few days off. You still seem tired. Don't worry, it won't take away from your vacation days. It'll be a new responsibility for you until you're all refreshed like you should be. Write a report about what movies you watch and text it to me. I'm expecting at least two sentences.” He said softly.
“...Are you sure, Phil? I mean, it's super generous and I'm really grateful but is it really okay?” You questioned.
“I'm sure, kid. Do you want a snack? I can make us some popcorn and we can watch one of your shows together.” He said.
That night was peaceful. You shared some laughs with your boss during your show and ate some nice dinner. You got to enjoy the dinner that he made you and you slept well once you went to bed. The next day started off with the same peacefulness. You ate leftovers for breakfast and watched your show until noon before deciding that you needed to probably cook for yourself.
You had tried to turn on the stove so that you could make yourself some eggs but it didn't seem to be working at all. You took out your phone, trying to pull up a social media app to get a tutorial on what to do but there was a weird box blocking the app when you pulled it up. It prompted you to enter your password and so you typed in your phone password. The box turned red for a moment to show that the password was incorrect before going back to the color that matched your phone's theme. You closed that app and opened all of your social media and communication apps one by one. All of them seemed to be blocked except for your texting app. You paused for a moment and stared at your screen.
The only contact that was there was of your boss, Phil.
You sent him a quick text that your phone wasn't working before deciding to just drive over to the main building to have IT check it out. You tried the door to the garage and it wasn't working. The key code kept saying that it was incorrect, despite it being the same code that you always entered in. You tried every door on the first floor that led outside and none of them would budge. You ended up trying to open the fancy electric windows and they wouldn't work either. You tried the doors to the balconies on the second and third floors, as well as the rest of the windows that you could reach, and none of them opened. You were starting to panic when you heard Phil pulling into the garage. You hurriedly went down to greet him and tell him about the situation.
“Phil…! My phone isn't working and the doors wouldn't open and neither would the windows…! Something's really wrong…!” You exclaimed as soon as he got into the house.
“Aw, I don't think there's anything wrong, kiddo. You just aren't used to any parental locks yet. It's all okay.” He said as he gently began petting your head, smiling down at you adoringly.
“What's that supposed to mean?” You said worriedly, not knowing well enough that you should push his hand away.
“You don't have to worry about that, kiddo. Go back to the couch and watch another of your little shows. I'm going to start making dinner. You just rest and relax. You don't ever have to worry about anything. Your old man's got everything under control.” He said with a casual sense of finality that made your skin crawl.
Phil didn't seem to notice your discomfort. He was too excited about you finally being exactly where you should be.
