Paul Ince and Gary Neville have both discussed Man Utd’s hopes of catching Liverpool (Pictures: Getty)Paul Ince disagrees with Gary Neville over Manchester United’s hopes of catching Premier League leaders Liverpool. Speaking on Friday, former Red Devils captain Neville said he was ‘more confident’ of United challenging Liverpool and Manchester City next season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are currently 37 points below Liverpool but Neville believes United will benefit from being one of the few clubs who can spend big in the next transfer window amid the coronavirus crisis. Neville explained: ‘If we hadn’t had this virus, I think Manchester United could’ve been two or three years away. ‘Where I think there is a massive change in making them competitive is if you were a top player in Europe at this moment in time, and you had the choice of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, all those clubs, Manchester United would likely lose out on those players because of where they are in the cycle of the team. ‘I think now, out of those eight clubs, I think six of them could be completely redundant in the transfer market in terms of spending £60m, £80m. Manchester United’s ability will still be there.’ The former Manchester United and England defender added on Sky Sports: ‘I don’t know why it is, but I feel a little more confident in Manchester United’s ability to challenge next season just because of what’s happened, and the fact they started to play a lot better before this lockdown.’ “Good players can always play together.” 🤠Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in no doubt Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes will thrive linking up in Manchester United’s midfield: https://t.co/RFdjPPG9TG@RenaultUK | #SkyFootballShow pic.twitter.com/P0y3j9Ylfq — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) May 8, 2020Ince, however, says Manchester United are ‘kidding themselves’ if they think they can catch Liverpool in the next couple of years. ‘It will take a long time to catch up and if anyone at Old Trafford thinks it can be done in a couple of years with some big money signings, they are kidding themselves,’ Ince told Planet Football. ‘There has been a lot of damage caused by the instability at the club over the last six years and at the same time, Liverpool have had stability, especially since Klopp came in. Jack Grealish is one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets (Picture: Getty)Paul Ince believes Jack Grealish would ‘fit in with any team in the top five’ but has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to strongly consider his options before spending big on the Aston Villa star in order to get the balance right in Manchester United’s midfield. Grealish was having an outstanding campaign as captain of struggling Villa when the coronavirus crisis brought English football to a halt and United are reportedly plotting a bid for the 24-year-old midfielder. Though Grealish appeared to put the switch in jeopardy last month after he was caught ignoring the UK government’s lockdown measures to attend a party in Birmingham, the Red Devils have decided to press ahead with their £70million move. Read the latest updates:Coronavirus news live Grealish has shone in a struggling Villa team this season (Picture: Getty)Ince has been massively impressed by Grealish’s recent form and can envisage the Englishman at a top Premier League club next season. However, he insists United have to be ‘careful’ with the players they bring in this summer as he feels Solskjaer is also crying out for a defensive midfielder in the mould of N’Golo Kante or Roy Keane. ‘Do I see him as a United player? Well, I could also see him at Manchester City or Liverpool. Tottenham also wanted him not so long ago,’ the ex-United midfielder told The Daily Star. ‘There will be plenty of suitors for Grealish. We’re all saying United, but he’d fit in with any team in the top five. ‘But all this talk of creative players, you’ve got to be careful about getting the balance – you still need a defensive block. Ince is a fan of Grealish but has warned United over a £70m move for the midfielder (Picture: Getty)‘They need someone who can cover space – like an N’Golo Kante or Roy Keane. Look at what Klopp has done with Liverpool, he’s got things in perfect harmony. ‘That’s what Solskjaer is now trying to do. You always need that defensive element in there. ‘I’m just happy United are now in the market for these types of players again. ‘But will they challenge next season? I’m still not sure.’ Follow Metro Sport across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
