Remember a few months ago I made a post about how all the commercials, businesses, celebrities and random avg Joe's were talking about frontline workers, including food industry workers, were heroes and necessary for the very fabric of America. Remember in that rant I talked about how tips increased and people were actually on our side when it came to capitalism and pay with our essential jobs. Then I mentioned about a month or two later, regardless of where the pandemic was at, things would go back to normal and these sudden "low end essential jobs" will go back to being treated poorly and as if we are all ignorant, dumb clowns that didnt make correct life choices. That we deserve our shit oay that isnt even a living wage no matter what state you live in.... yeah. Let me find that post because I hit the nail on the head. We are back to that. We are back to being treated like shit and hated on by customers. We are back to people pretending we didnt risk our lives and family's lives by working during the pandemic. Thank you America. May you continue your hypocrisy and completely uneducated, sad, terrible views. Welcome to America. Home of the brave, aka, the underpaid who are desperate to gain money just to live they will put their lives on the line. We also dont have insurance nor can we afford it so god forbid we get injured during our tasks to help those more privileged (some dont even work, its just old money). Then when we do get sick we cant go see a doctor because of low pay and this is the very few times we wont get fired because of the pandemic. That being said, most states at least mine is, is an at will state, meaning they can fire me for any reason at all and they dont have to tell me why. So yeah, I am sure people have gotten fired for getting covid because they can't get other to cover their shift the entire time their in quarantine even though they should be shutting down for two week anyways. But hey. Capitalism am I right? Fuck the little guy. The hard worker that shows up sick because they cant afford to miss work or get fired. The one that cant get health insurance. The one who cant get a second job because schedules come out the week before and expect you to find a replacement. The one who won't let you get a second job and then yell at you for trying or for getting one and needing a day off for your other job but wont give you a raise and/or more hours to meet the bill requirements and get food or meds (which again no insurance so bye to that anyways like in my case).

So here we are again. It's the end of 2020. Covid is still rampant in the United states. We have gotten 1,200 for one month. No rent relief. No more money. No hazard pay. Nothing but a pat on the back followed by a kick in the ass to get us back to work. Welcome to the essential working class in America. Welcome to my life. Welcome to the life of millions.

A Guide To Job Hunting

I’ve been job hunting for the past 2-3 months now and finally got a offer I feel good about taking and with how times are I thought I’d offer my advice and thoughts for others. (For reference I’ve been in retail 5 years and 3 of them are management so I’d like to think I have some idea of what I’m talking about).

#1-Finding Job Postings

It may sound like really obvious advice but seriously use every available website at your disposal. You should have accounts with Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn just to name a few. Make sure you actually take the time to flesh out your profiles with each one. You could even copy and paste your info with each site. Get a nice profile picture and fill out the bio stuff. These are steps that take some time investment up front but pay dividends down the line. Employers actually use these to both attract new talent and hunt for it too.

#2-Finding a Job that Fits You

If you’re desperately searching because you need a job or leasurly searching for a new employer you’re gonna wanna find one that you actually wanna work for. Trust me taking a position with a company you don’t mesh well with can be miserable and soul sucking. Especially if the pay isn’t there. Use the aforementioned websites to find a job that actually pays what you’re looking for (obviously not all of these sites are 100% accurate but we’ll get to that later) and has some decent employee reviews.

#3-Resumes and Cover Letters

I won’t go too much into this because there’s thousands of guides out there on the internet but I will offer my advice. As for resumes don’t be afraid to use some color. For example pick a nice color for your header and use white text to contrast it. If you need help padding your resume don’t be afraid to throw in stuff like what skills you possess and other non work things you do like volunteer work. As for cover letters they’re really essential but they’re not as hard as you think. If you’re churning out a lot of job applications like I was here’s how to make it easy. Just write one and swap out the company names. Seriously it’s that easy. Make your first paragraph directed at the company you applied for and as long as it’s in the same field as the other companies (retail in my case) the rest can be generally about you and your skills that are relevant to the field.

#4-Job Interviews

Ok so you’ve applied and been invited for a interview. There’s some easy steps to make yourself seem more professional. Obviously dress nice, but there’s other stuff too. As a general rule I always bring extra copies of my resume. Go out and get some decent resume paper and something to carry them in. I picked up a leather portfolio from a thrift store for cheap but you could honestly just go with a slim black folder. Always arrive early, 15-10 minutes at most. Store managers have a lot going on so in reality they’re probably not going they realize the time. Research some questions that get asked in your specific field and have answers ready for them. (If you’re interviewing for retail/ retail management feel free to message me cause I know all of them by now.) Just remember that this is your one chance to make a impression, with how the job market is employers are seeing a record number of job applications and you’re gonna have to beat the others that are vying for that position too. Also be ready for pay negotiations in some cases.

#5-Pay Negotiations

Although most entry level jobs have a set pay some often vary based on your experience and location. If you wanna squeeze the most out of a new job you have to prepare. Research the job salary before hand on Indeed and Glassdoor. These are usually estimates but they’re pretty accurate. You have one of two options when it comes to the question “What are you looking for compensation wise”. Tactic A is to just name a very reasonable in line price, there’s no shame In this. Or you can do what I like to do. Ask for a little bit more than the usual rate. If you’ve got the experience to back up your price and it’s not insanely high they’re probably going to make a note of what you asked for. The second step to this is to in your follow up email the next day thank them for their time and mention you’re willing to work on the pay since you’d hate to miss out on the opportunity. This has worked tremendously in my favor cause it makes the hiring manager feel like they’ve won and has a little more control here. (Seriously I I knew the base pay for a job was 17/hr, I asked for 19/hr and ended up getting 17.5/hr which really does add up over time).

#6-The Follow Up

I can’t stess this enough. Follow up with whoever you interviewed with, either with a email, text or phone call. Beyond the interview this is your only chance to leave a impression. Be polite and thank them for their time and the opportunity to interview and that you look forward to hearing back from them. Keep it brief and simple.

#7-Post Interview

Unfortunately most companies won’t bother to call you back if they decide to go with somebody else. As a rule of thumb I wait about 4 days before I give up on expecting a call back. But the important thing is to not get discouraged. Don’t look at it like it was a failed job interview, look at it as a chance to improve. Trust me after going to 7 different job interviews I run them like clock work now. Always be optimistic and keep trying.
