The triangle shirtwaist factory fire ... A shirtwaist is a button down blouse 👚 A man-made disaster that could have been prevented. Just off Washington square park in NYC there was a sweatshop that thrived from cheap labour. The floors were filled with migrant garment workers mostly women & children, the factory managed by 2 men Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. A fire started ... But fire exit doors were kept locked & fire extinguishers did not work... Workers were trapped, others only with a window to escape. 146 workers died. Max Blanck and Isaac Harris were found not guilty. We live in a similar way today, garment workers being exploited and ASOS, Boohoo as well as other retail giants remain “not responsible” as they are not directly employed by them - even on this occasion the garment worker managers was found ‘not guilty’ They are responsible for the act of exploitation, therefore they are responsible for their lives & what suffering becomes of that - The brands label sewn in by the factory is that same brands responsibility. #IMadeYourClothes Morning 🤩 I hope you’re well! I started Slow Garments a little under a year ago now which means a little reflection is on the horizon. The journey started a few years ago when I bought my first sewing machine to go a bit more “full time” I just moved out of home and I needed a “hobby” 😅 Little did I know over 3 years later I would have 3 sewing machines! 😆 Sewing for me is the most enjoyable part of the process, you know there’s that one particular bit of your job that you really love? Well that’s my bit 🧵 When I started Slow Garments I was still going through a “journey” I would say, of understanding about #WhoMadeMyClothes and trying to answer lots of questions which truly can only be answered in time. It was so upsetting to me that Garment Workers were being exploited and I knew nothing about it. Was it my ignorance? Or was it that there just wasn’t enough people talking about it? Now, my understanding of the importance of ethically made clothing is much more knowledgable and if you ask me about it, I am going to talk to you until ... well, you tell me to be quiet 🤣 Slow Garments having ethical values, principles and morals isn’t easy, but I will never give up on educating, another huge enjoyment for me.
