Beaded Peacock Socks
As promised (at least to myself) here are the finished Beaded Peacock Socks. The pattern is clear and easy to follow, and it's really a quick knit when you're not adding beads (and it's still pretty quick while you're adding beads, as you get caught up in the fun of it.) I pretty much did everything wrong on these socks -- mismatched needle sizes, poor bead color choices (I bought a mix tube, sorted all the colors, planned out a progression for the beads, and didn't notice that I didn't have enough beads to do even the first sock like that, let alone the second. Luckily, you can't really tell.), and somehow managed to make Jeni's surprisingly stretchy bindoff not at all. It is a testament to the yarn and pattern that they are still gorgeous socks.
Peacock socks
ARGH! What is wrong with my gauge? I am used to having, if you'll excuse the conceit, perfect gauge. If I use the suggested yarn with the suggested needles, I am always so close to gauge as makes no nevermind. Except it seems to have left me. I had to go down three needle sizes to get the Your Mom's mittens to even come close to gauge, and now. Now. These Peacock socks! Infuriating!
The called for gauge in the pattern is 7 stitches per inch using sock yarn on size 1 needles. She has a lot of sizing options (which will probably save me), so if your gauge is off a little, you can fudge it.
Well, here's my first toe. It is on size 1 Hiya Hiyas, and I got to this point and thought, "Hmm... looking a little tight." So, I measured my stitches, and I was getting over 9 stitches per inch. Tight, yes! That will never work. So, I ripped it out and restarted on size two Hiya Hiyas. (I don't have 1.5 Hiya Hiyas, and I'm spoiled.)
Well, now it looks huge! And a quick comparison to my foot shows quite a bit of extra room in the sock. My gauge? 7 stitches per inch. Spot on, but way too big for my foot! I mean. I know the obvious solution is to cast on with 1.5s, and that's what I'll do.
After this yarn has spent some time in the time out corner. Hopefully it will take the time to think about what it's done.
I still have to finish those mittens, anyway!
