The guide to avoid cheesy Valentine restaurants...
With Valentines rather over-hyped (or over garnished with cheese) be it your single or in a relationship, keeping it subtle at home works for me. The 14th Feb hated by some, loved by consumerism has lost it's authentic meaning. However, it still remains a good excuse for flowers, chocs and wine from whoever is buying! This year I discovered an Asian inspired recipe from fellow blogger Rosie Londoner http://www.thelondoner.me to cook, away from the naff helium balloons and jazz music. The dish involved searing tuna steaks accompanied by a pea mash grizzled in a wasabi, soy and butter glaze. Teamed with a bottle of red it's makes for a delicious combination, which brings me to the real bonus of staying home put - copious bottles of wine without hefty taxi bills or a DUI !
My own Christmas!
Of course I don't want to withhold my own Totally Vegetarian Christmas Menu. I'm going to make it tomorrow [here in The Netherlands we have two days of eating after Christmas eve].
appetizer:
Toast with Green pea mash with feta and basil
starter:
Garlicsoup with pomegranate
Main:
Selery and fig salade
Roasted potatoes with garlic and rosemary
Roasted fennel
Mini pecan-spinach-brie-quich
Dessert:
Eton Mess [crushed merengues with cream and fruit]
Most of these recipes are quite original but still easy to make. Except for the mini-quiche. This is actually a variation on a quite standard answer for the general public on the question: how to feed a vegetarian. But since I always try to go out of my way to be original, we hardly ever eat this combination of nuts, spinach and cheese. And since it ís a nice combo and I felt like it, I'm going to make it!
I'm most excited about the Eton Mess. I saw this recipe on Nigella's show and absolutely fell in love with it. Since I have a slight addiction to anything meringue, this might be the ultimate option! It's really easy as well. You can make or buy meringues [I actually bought ginormous ones], crush them but keep one whole. Make some whipped cream and add a table spoon of Greek yoghurt to it to make it more substantial. Gently mix the cream and crushed meringues together. Add the fruit (your choice, the classic is with strawberries like my used picture but I prefer blueberries) and attack!
