Orkney Hood
The Orkney Hood is a rare archaeological textile discovered in 1867 in a peat bog in Orkney, Scotland.
It is the only complete item of clothing in Scotland that predates the medieval period. The hood is estimated to be over 1,500 years old, dating to somewhere between 250-615 AD.
It is made of sheep's wool and features a tablet-woven trim and fringe.
The garment was preserved after being lost or deliberately deposited in a peat bog. The lack of oxygen in the bog prevented normal decay, allowing the wool fabric to survive remarkably well for centuries.
The hood is made of sheep’s wool, decorated with fringes and tablet-woven bands, reflecting early textile skills in Scotland.
Today, it provides invaluable insight into ancient clothing, craftsmanship, and daily life in the region long before written records.
Lindow Man 1st Century CE 'Bog Body', The British Museum, London
Lindow Man is a well-preserved human body found in a peat-bog at Lindow Moss, near Manchester, in 1984. He died a violent death, sustaining many injuries before he was placed face down in a pool in the bog.
He was about 25 years old, 1.7m (5ft 6ins) tall and weighed 60-65kg (9.5-10st).
He had done very little hard, manual work, because his fingernails were well manicured.
His beard and moustache had been cut by a pair of shears.
His last meal probably included unleavened bread made from wheat and barley, cooked over a fire on which heather had been burnt.
Sunday bog magic
you should step into the peat bog with me. our bodies and clothes will become perfectly preserved. until our mummified remains will eventually be unearthed by archeologists thousands of years from now. and become a treasure trove of information regarding our era. or maybe not and we remain in each other’s embrace for the rest of eternity
