Strandkörbe auf Usedom. Usedom (Polish: Uznam) is an island in the Ostsee (Baltic Sea) belonging both to Germany (western part) and to Poland (eastern part). It's a popular seaside resort for people from Germany and Poland. Peenemünde is located here, the birthplace of the rocket. Standard Hochdeutsch is spoken throughout the German portion of the island. Traditional Low German dialects are still alive as well. Both Polish and some German are spoken on the Polish side.

At their Peenemuende Research Facility the Germans, under the technical direction of Von Braun, developed the V-2 Rocket. The V-2 became one of the best known of all early missiles. The 46-foot rocket utilized alcohol and liquid oxygen as fuel and could carry a 1,650 pound warhead 225 miles. Some historians have estimated that by the end of World War II, the Germans had fired nearly 3,000 V-2 weapons against England and other targets.. The German engineers and scientists who developed the V-2 came to the United States at the end of World War II and continued rocket testing under the direction of the U. S. Army, launching more than sixty V-2s.
