“ Durante l'ultima guerra, i tedeschi cominciarono a bombardare l'Inghilterra con le così dette armi segrete, cioè con bombe lanciate dal continente europeo, le V-1 e le V-2; la « V » era l'iniziale del vocabolo Vergeltung, che significa rappresaglia. Le armi segrete venivano al termine di una macabra escalation che, partendo da pochi e sporadici bombardamenti sulle città, aveva portato alla distruzione di interi centri abitati, alla strage di centinaia di migliaia di individui, nel corso di poche ore. I tedeschi erano stati molto ingegnosi nello sviluppo di quelle armi micidiali, con le quali riuscivano a colpire il nemico, pur non potendo violare i suoi cieli con gli aeroplani della Luftwaffe, ormai sconfitta e annientata dall'aviazione anglo-americana. Le V-1 e le V-2 sorvolavano la Manica, si abbattevano con un sibilo sul suolo britannico: sul bersaglio, o quasi. Per un certo periodo di tempo, infatti, molte bombe destinate a Londra fallivano il bersaglio di parecchi chilometri, e cadevano nelle contee meridionali, nelle home counties, più scarsamente abitate. E lì facevano, come è naturale, un minor numero di vittime. Gli inglesi pensarono che conveniva far credere ai tedeschi che le loro bombe cadessero tutte su Londra, in modo da non indurli a correggere il tiro. E Duncan Sandys, al quale era stata affidata la direzione politica della difesa di Londra, si accingeva a mandare in Germania i segnali più adatti a generare l'inganno, quando gli arrivò il divieto dal Consiglio dei ministri. Perché gli vietavano di procedere? I ministri, riuniti sotto la presidenza di Winston Churchill, avevano discusso il problema delle armi segrete, e si erano ricordati di una regola che si chiama the Divine Prerogative: è una divina prerogativa lo stabilire, di volta in volta, chi vive e chi muore, secondo gli imperscrutabili disegni dell'Essere Supremo. Se gli inglesi inducevano i tedeschi, con una falsa informazione, a far cadere le bombe in un luogo invece che in un altro, toglievano a Dio la prerogativa di decidere chi sarebbe stato ucciso dalle esplosioni, e lo decidevano essi stessi, perché sarebbero morte, in seguito all'inganno, certe persone, e non certe altre. Ciò non era ammissibile. Duncan Sandys, si racconta, fu di altro avviso. Egli ignorò tranquillamente il divieto, e sfidando la prerogativa divina cercò di fuorviare i servizi di informazione tedeschi, in modo che le bombe continuassero a falciare vittime, poche, nelle home counties, invece che nei quartieri di Londra, fittamente popolati. “

The artist shows here a hypothetical spaceship, based on the V-2 design, and incorporating many fully tested devices and principles. The hull is essentially a cylindrical, stressed skin structure, 80' long and 10' feet in outside diameter. It is double walled, with very efficient insulation. The extreme nose contains a series of glass fiber parachutes to be used for vertical stabilization in atmospheric landings, with actual deceleration effected by the main jet. Below the chute hold is space for recording cameras, cosmic ray detectors, and other instruments. Beneath this is the upper deck of the pressurized control cabin. Next is a compartment packed with mechanisms; autopilot, gyrostabilizer, air and temperature control plant, radio and radar installations, etc. An airlock gives access to the outside through a two-piece door, the lower port of which serves as a platform when open. Below the crew space the fuel and oxidizer tanks occupy more than a third of the ship's length, and beneath them is the rocket engine, with its pumps and plumbing. Worm gear driven tubular legs in the fins permit leveling the ship on rough ground for the return take-off.

Walt Disney and Dr. Wernher von Braun, then Chief of Guided Missile Development Operation Division for the US Army, was visited by Disney in 1954. In the 1950's, Von Braun (holding a model of the XR-1 experimental aircraft) worked with the Disney Studios as a technical director, making three films about space exploration for Disney’s television show. He also worked as a consultant for the Rocket to the Moon attraction at Disneyland. A model of the V-2 rocket (which the attraction’s rocket was based on) is in the background.
