Have you seen the new Penguin minis? They are tiny books that, according to the NYTimes, are the size of a cellphone, no thicker than your thumb, with paper as thin as onion skin, and have the full unabridged text. They can be read with one hand. And they've come out in YA books, including books by Jennifer Niven (All The Bright Places), Gayle Foreman (If I Stay), John Green, Marie Lu, E Lockhart (We Were Liars), Ally Condie, David Levithan, and some of my top favorite classics Anne of Green Gables by L M Montgomery, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Heidi by Johanna Spyri, and The Outsiders by S E Hinton. I LOVE miniature editions of books, so I'm excited to see these. Apparently they're very popular in the Netherlands, and I can see them becoming popular in North America, too. I want to get myself some of them. I think they are adorable! And super portable. I am about to try reading a Penguin Mini and it feels like I am going on an adventure. I first discovered this format for books last fall when I was teaching a section on how modern technology has impacted the way that we read. These mini flip books stem from Europe; in the Netherlands they are referred to as "flipbacks" or "dwarsliggers." I picked this book up in the winter, but have delayed starting it up.
