In a country that makes up 80+ percent of Roman Catholics, it's normal for Filipinos to have so many religious traditions including some that they consider "taboo" practices, which the Catholic Church prohibits and does not endorse. One of these is “penitensya” or self-flagellations and crucifixions. In “penitensya,” hooded men cut the skin on their backs using a blade and continuously whip it with bamboo sticks to bleed, as a form of repentance for their sins.
