Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club.
If you’ve ever been wandering through North Philadelphia and see a horse hanging out on a street corner, don’t be alarmed. It’s not a glitch in the matrix. You probably just glanced a member of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, one of several horse clubs in cities across America, and arguably the most famous. The club has existed for over 100 years, bringing together the men, boys, and horses of North Philadelphia to teach discipline, responsibility, and provide mentoring for a lot of children who may not have another safe place to go.
Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club is a registered non-profit, whose goal it is to fight against unemployment and the drug epidemic by pairing young black men with horses and training them to take care of the animals, many of whom were rescued at central-PA horse auctions to be given a second chance at life. It’s a fantastic juxtaposition to see the self-proclaimed “urban cowboys” ride their horses against the background of Philadelphia’s infamously crumbling infrastructure. In recent years, the club has been struggling to survive thanks to the city’s continuous “urban redevelopment” (cough gentrification cough). But it’s a Philadelphia institution that not only provides a safe learning environment for young people, but also saves horses from slaughter. And it’s really freaking cool.
