Summary: Jason didn’t mean to adopt a Talon. It just sort of happened, after he found him hiding on the fire escape outside of his apartment and in clear need of help. Now the bar where he works has never had a better protector, plus it’s great to have the company at home. If only they didn’t have the looming threat of Batman finding out hanging over their heads, everything would be perfect.

He thinks it’s a cat, at first. The sound that echoes into the living room of his tiny apartment from the rickety fire escape outside.

Jason, having just arrived home, initially means to ignore it. No part of the building in which he lives is up to code, and probably hasn’t been for years before he moved in; he doesn’t exactly want to go risking his neck in the rain that’s lashing down outside, all for the sake of some mangy stray that will probably only attempt to claw his head off in return for his help. Especially since he’s only just managed to get dried off after the long walk back from work himself.

But then the sound repeats itself, echoing over the end of a rumble of thunder into something that, to either man or beast, is instantly recognisable as a cry of pain, and after that he immediately knows he’s done for.

When Slade gets hired for a job on the outskirts of civilized space, one of his first steps is to stop by one of the few space stations out this far and pick up a slave from the dealer there. Something pretty and ideally off-the-grid, to serve as a distraction for his target. He gets a little more than he was expecting in the form of a capital-planet slave, bizarrely far away from anywhere it should call home and just disobedient enough to make him interested.

The station is a haphazard mess of a place, with parts clearly salvaged from various ships bolted together to make new additions as necessary, and Slade resigns himself to negotiating with amateurs the second it comes into view on his long range scanners. It was his expectation anyway, given the remote location, but there are occasionally remote outposts that manage to have some decent level of civilization to them. Even some that he might not be able to freely traverse while still dressed in his armor, or with his basic weaponry at hand. This place isn't one of them.

This also isn't the sort of place professionals of his level frequent, and frankly Slade wouldn't set foot on it either if he wasn't in need of a distraction to complete his current job. A living one, ideally, but he'll settle for the materials for a high-yield explosion if need be.

@pentapoda he arrived! Thank you so much! I'll have to find him a tiny frame. Other disciplines must make do with not-so-great representation in media (I'm only kind of looking at you, Indiana Jones), but we epidemiologists are lucky enough to have @laporcupina's Yoni Safir.

“Jason, everything that Li and Yusef need to put Zima and his lieutenants away for good is going to be in that caravan. There are people whose lives depend on this.”

There’s a long, angry pause. Dick can practically see Jason grinding his jaw on the other end of the line. “And what about you? What about your life?”

“I’ll be fine,” Dick says. His eyes flicker to Slade, watching him without a trace of emotion on his scarred face. “I’ll find a way out.”
