Since I found out you've also read the squad, I'm probably going to flood you with asks about it in the near future.
But first, rank the girls in the squad from your most favorite to least favorite and say what you want to know or hope to see for each.
yesss please send me as many asks about the squad as you can think of I love it!!
tara leery - I love, love, love tara and honestly just want to know more about her upbringing as the kid of cia officers
toby klein - she's such a vibe and I love how she realises that the whole cheer charade is worth it. I wanted to see her bond with some of the other members of the squad who are lower down this list bc I feel like that's why they're low down
zee kim - my cutie-patootie profiler. she's perfect I just wish we got to see that nerdy side of her a bit more
brooke camden - I needed more of her mommy and daddy issues. we needed more troubled teen angst
chloe larson - I needed more chloe-toby rivalry (I ship chloe/toby way more than toby/jake)
lucy wheeler - it feels criminal placing lucy so low on this list. she's perfect I have no faults other than that I wanted to see more of her
april manning - again, feels criminal placing april so low. she had so much potential I just wish we got to see more of her
bubbles lane, brit, and tiff - they were all fun but had barely any depth or character development, so I want that
Book Review #66 of 2026--
Perfect Cover by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Rating: 3.5 stars.
Read from May 28th to 29th.
To be frank, this is not a premise that would have made me pick this book up if I wasn't a fan of Jennifer Lynn Barnes. There's just something about her writing style that I love so I'm willing to give just about anything a shot. And it was pretty good. In Perfect Cover, we're following Toby who is the least likely person to get invited to join the Varsity Cheer Squad but somehow, the invitation is in her hands. Planning on attending the informational meeting to avoid detention, Toby has decided to turn her nose up at those who have constantly done the same to her. But secret messages and codes draw her into a hidden world of underage government operatives. No one expects anything from the cheerleaders.
I really think this one could have benefitted from being another 50 to 60 pages longer, but that's a common complaint over here so we'll just breeze past that one. I wish we had gotten to explore more with the other members of the squad before diving into the mission because I was getting them a little mixed up while they were doing their thing. It was fine by the end but it was a bit confusing at first. I absolutely love the espionage of it all. The whole complex where their offices and different labs are is so great. I can also picture it so well. And I love that Toby was constantly asking things like, "So this is where my parents' tax money is going?" My favorite characters were Lucy and Tara, with a nod to Jack over there. If we had gotten to know him more then he would probably have gotten more than the honorable mention.
Overall, this is just sort of fun and goofy and a good time. I read it over my two days off this week and it went by so quickly. I have the second one on hold with my library so I expect I'll get to it next month.
If I had a dollar for every time Jennifer Lynn Barnes named the second book in a series about teenagers with natural abilities who are recruited by a federal agency a two letter title starting with "killer" and made the cover purple I'd have two dollars, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice!!
I'm reading perfect cover by jlb and toby is both the best and worst mc ever
Is there a fandom for the squad duology/perfect cover?? I thought little white lies and the ruling class didn't have a fandom but damn this goes next level. And the fact the book is so good and has no fans is criminal
overall thoughts on the squad duology
i loved these so much!!
