I wonder how much of the trend of setting so many movies and shows in the years between the early 1980s and the early 2000s can be attributed to the fact that this era is recent enough to be depicted as close to modern day, yet far enough to not have our current technological devices.
I bet there are some movies out there that act like they want to "homage" the 80s or the 90s because "this is a tribute to that era" is ten times less awkward than "we needed to set this movie in a time where the plot wouldn't be solved within the first 5 minutes by using a smartphone".
