But that brings us to bigger good things and bigger bad things. If it’s something like a bed they are hurt permanently in a way that makes them need that bed or suffer worse. If it’s pain killers perhaps their nerves are damaged. Things like that.

When whumpee is rescued maybe they think that this is something they need to pay for, maybe they get nervous when their rescuers don’t hurt them. Maybe the price of freedom was the trauma they gained along the way, the constant sense that they need to trade something every time something good happens to them.
