“Jacques Cazotte“, ca. 1760-65, Jean-Baptiste Perronneau, National Gallery, London.
I know today is not Wednesday, but I HAD to share this guy in a pink suit with the biggest cuffs ever. And the reason I love this portrait is Cazotte’s expression: he does not look to the viewer and he seems to be in the middle of gossiping with someone else we do not see. Also: the shade of his beard, the black ribbon around his neck, and the white lining of his coat. I just love this portrait.
Jacques Cazotte was a naval administrator, but his real passion was literature and his verses and novels were quite famous back in the day. His wit was also very well known (come on, just look at his face, he’s about to say something!). He was guillotined during the French Revolution.
