We can hate on David for obvious floppy reasons, but what I cannot stand is the way he, as an artist, treated those in misery. People led to their executions could be whistled, cheered, provoke all kinds of reactions, but it's artist's job to preserve them in the last moment, paying respects no matter who it is. It's their final portrayal, and their last honour. And what David does to the dead will never not piss me off. He has an opportunity to fulfill the most important mission an artist has, preserve someone's memory, and he does it with caricature.
