The @ProprietaryHouse in Perth Amboy, #NewJersey is the only proprietary governor's mansion of the original Thirteen Colonies still standing. Construction began in 1762 and was completed in 1764. The house was first occupied by Chief Justice Frederick Smyth by rent and approval of "The Proprietors" from 1766 to 1773. From 1774 to 1776, William Franklin, the Royal Governor of New Jersey, occupied the house. Between 1809 and 1817 (and a short stint in the early 1880s), it was the Brighton #Hotel. It later served as a private mansion, a retirement home, and a boarding house. Restoration efforts began in 1904 and continue to this day. The home is now a #museum. It was added to the @nationalregisternps in 1971. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #americanhistory #blog #blogger #travelblog #travelblogger #jerseycollective #explorenj #journeythroughjersey #perthamboy #perthamboynj #proprietaryhouse #eastjersey #1776 #njspots #nrhp #brickporn #brick #royalgovernor #williamfranklin (at Proprietary House Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvFu1KDlgcJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xp2x5hdaanvl
