The rear of the Zabriskie-Steuben House at Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge, #NewJersey. The house served as General Washington’s headquarters in September 1780 for 16 days when the Continental Army encamped on the Kinderkamack Ridge. The area surrounding the house was constantly the scene of skirmishes between the Continentals and the British. The home’s earliest section was built in 1752 by Jan Zabriskie. The State of New Jersey confiscated the stone mansion from Zabriskie, a Loyalist, in 1781. The New Jersey Legislature gave the Zabriskie estate at New Bridge to Major General Baron von Steuben, the Inspector General of the Continental Army, on December 23, 1783 on condition that he occupy it and not rent it to a tenant. After a series of owners, New Jersey took possession of the historic mansion and 1-acre for $9,000 on June 27, 1928. The site is now maintained by the Bergen County Historical Society and is composed of two other homes that were moved to the site in order to save them from demolition. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #archi_ologie #architecture #oldhouselove #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #americanhistory #explorenj #visitnj #njspots #jerseycollective #journeythroughjersey #historicsite #revwar #revolutionarywar #steubenhouse #riveredgenj #riveredge #bergencountynj (at New Bridge Landing Historic Pk) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9fimKQnA90/?igshid=4w7r7h4qv5cy
