i can’t say i love peter hammond’s directoral vision but i am obsessed by how committed he is, almost every episode to the “holmes gay? holmes queer? holmes not straight?” agenda. “master blackmailer” obviously, is the apotheosis of it. but “abbey grange,” with holmes’ attitude toward and around mary brackenstall? “sign of four,” with the repeated ambivalence to mary morstan and the decision not to make watson divorce holmes to marry her? “the three gables,” with the expanded figure of langdale pike and the narrative thread of innuendo about love affairs (of all sorts) suppressed for the sake of appearance (not to mention the villainy of coercive heterosexuality)?
