i can’t say i love peter hammond’s directoral vision but i am obsessed by how committed he is, almost every episode to the “holmes gay? holmes queer? holmes not straight?” agenda. “master blackmailer” obviously, is the apotheosis of it. but “abbey grange,” with holmes’ attitude toward and around mary brackenstall? “sign of four,” with the repeated ambivalence to mary morstan and the decision not to make watson divorce holmes to marry her? “the three gables,” with the expanded figure of langdale pike and the narrative thread of innuendo about love affairs (of all sorts) suppressed for the sake of appearance (not to mention the villainy of coercive heterosexuality)?

#soho incident #spin a dark web #film noir #1956 #vernon sewell #ian stuart black #robert westerby #lee patterson #faith domergue #rona anderson #martin benson #robert arden #joss ambler #peter hammond #peter burton #sam kydd #russell westwood #patricia ryan #bernard fox #robert sharples #minor brit noir with very little to distinguish it from the quota quicky b pictures being pumped out in this era (of which star Patterson #was a mainstay) except for the Columbia logo at the beginning. hits a lot of genre notes in short order‚ managing to cram in boxing‚ race #tracks and gangland politics in less than 80 minutes. probably not a lot to write home about unless you happen to be fond of this type of #picture (i am‚ inordinately so). most interesting is the romance between Patterson and Domergue: there was only a few years between them but #the vibe is unmistakably that of a mature older woman schooling an inexperienced young man‚ as she chides him on manners and teases and #rebuffs him in equal measure. she retains the upper hand even whilst reclining beneath him; alas‚ once the relationship is established‚ it #quickly becomes more typical of the era (and more boring). this also ends on an improbably cheerful note which beggars belief #but I had a good time‚ and the supporting cast is fun (Martin Benson particularly good as the boss whose fine tastes can't mask his gutter #origins). lightweight fluff but by no means a bad time

Yaaay Peter Hammond! I think overall he did a great job with the episodes he directed, I mean Master Blackmailer will always be my fav Granada SH movie (i love Sign of 4 as well). Sometimes his style was a bit too much for my taste but his vision is really interesting and mostly fitting for the stories. Also the aesthetic he created is the definitive one when I think of the series.
