Chablis

The Burgundy Wine Board ran a trade tasting of Chablis wines in London on Monday 26 June, the first such tasting in 10 years. The event featured 50 wines from all 4 appellations – Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru.

Chablis is home to some 5000 hectares of vines, all exclusively Chardonnay. The tasting demonstrated just how wonderfully in tune the wines are with today’s tastes. The Chardonnay grape, here, is at its purest and most elegant with producers seldom bothering to use oak influences. The wines show the terroir which provides the steely acidity and beautiful minerality for which Chablis is famous.

The star wines are undoubtedly those from the 7 Grand Cru climats which are all located on one hill overlooking the town of Chablis at an elevation of 150 – 200 metres. However, all the wines showed true Chablis typicity – light-bodied, refreshing, elegant with light alcohol.

One wine professional summed up when best to drink the different classes of Chablis as follows:

Petit Chablis – with strangers

Chablis – when friends come round

Premier Cru – when family come round

Grand Cru - with your partner (or when they’ve gone to bed!)

Petit Chablis Domain d'Elise 2013

Color: greeny white Nose: hay, citrus,  milk Taste: delicate, round, silky, mineral and veggie. Nice finish as for Chablis. Overall: 9/10

Petit Chablis 2013, La Chablisienne

Color: silver pale

Nose: not to veggie'ish - citrus and minerals

Taste: very delicate acidity. Nice refreshing minerliaty. Very refreshing. Young but noble and balanced.

Overall rating: 8/10
