“The Forgotten Shadow of the Bat in the 1980s” - 1981: “To Kill A Legend”: The publication Detective Comics, originally National Allied Publications, began with issue 1 in March 1937 focusing on pulp fiction detective tales, introducing new heroes such as the Bat-Man in issue 27 on March 30, 1939. In March 1981, Detective Comics released their 500th issue with over 80 pages celebrating many DC heroes, including the Dark Knight (middle cover presented by Jim Aparo, Carmine Infantino, Dick Giordano and Joe Kubert). Their title story written by Alan Brennert and illustrated by Giordano, Adrienne Roy and John Costanza (top and bottom panels presented), “To Kill A Legend”, showcases a new ‘Imaginary Story’ for Batman, which were especially popular during the Silver Age of Comics (late 1950s - 1960s). On the 20th anniversary of the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents by Joe Chill, Batman and Robin (of Earth One) are visited by The Phantom Stranger who gives Batman the chance to save the lives of Thomas and Martha Wayne on Earth Five. As Batman and Robin track down this earth’s Joe Chill, they learn no costumed or super heroes exist in this universe, leaving our Dynamic Duo to wonder if the death of Bruce’s parents really is the true inspiration on his path to being the Batman. Batman learns that in this world, Lew Moxon hires another man besides Joe Chill to murder the Waynes, finds him right before gunning them down on Park Row, (before it is dubbed Crime Alley) and saves their lives. Phantom Stranger appears and brings Batman and Robin back to their Earth, leaving them wondering what will happen to Bruce Wayne in this future. In the Epilogue, we see Bruce more studios, reading Sherlock Holmes novels and training his mind and body, having been inspired by the Bat-like creature that saved his family from the robbery on Park Row. The story ends with young Bruce deciding when he’s older to become the Batman, but not because of vengeance or guilt but out of 'awe, mystery and gratitude’. While the first official Elseworlds book “Gotham by Gaslight” is released in 1989, Brennert’s “To Kill A Legend” is a fantastic 'what if’ story in the Batman mythos. ✌🏼💙🦇

Clockwise we have #deadman lurking behind him is the grim visage of #thespectre now both are ghostly but I'm not sure about the third one. I don't know him very well. You might even say he is ...a stranger! #phantomstranger swipe>>>>for more views. https://www.instagram.com/p/B37IFFEByaZ/?igshid=1i7boajsfjnau
