I'm so happy DaouOffroad have The Wicked Game.
We've always known Daou has the chops. He's an utterly compelling screen presence with a one-of-a-kind face. He brings sternness, bravado, and layers of comedy to his salt-of-the-earth characters. And, ugh, the range of physicality he's been allowed to show us! You could feel the hundred year old man's aching joints in Century of Love but had no doubt he could kick your ass. Or look at Than's drunken swagger around his old childhood playground in this series and try not to smile.
But Offroad, he's only been able to give us glimpses of his strengths as an actor, and finally in The Wicked Game he gets a lead role where it can be on full display. Rather than the naïve boy he’s mostly played up until now, Offroad's best with fierce, complicated characters. His role in the little-discussed Our Days took advantage of this, and everyone online freaked out over his moments as the nine-tailed fox in Century of Love.
The truth is Offroad compelled the audience most when he turns inward for dark, maturer characters. There's a quiet storm that emanates from his stillness and calculating eyes. Will he choose choose peace or set a trap? Whisper lies or open his cold heart? In the same park scene I mentioned with Daou, you can see the memories and questions running through his character Pheem's mind. Without a word, regret and pain and conflict. He may be hardened to the point of cruelty but you feel his whole journey to it through Offroad's performance.
Finally, too, it feels like Daou and Offroad get to fully match each other's edge in a series! Obvi they've had it in life, and there was chemistry between Daou and Offroad in their shows before, but it often didn't feel entirely embedded in their characters. Here, though, their interactions are thick with the desire to pry open one another's emotional armor and soothe the pain they're hiding. It's not an easy task with these fucked-up individuals, but the challenge is where the sexual thrill comes from, for them and for us. Each character with their own distinct charisma complements the other, like a gun and a bullet. I'm dead.
soooo eboni! what do you think about the dynamic between daouoffroad so far in the wicked game?
are you as hopeful as i am about a role reversal? because it seems to me there's a clear seme and a clear uke and it's not exactlyyyy who i would have expected!
Mickeyyyyyyyyyyy I am finding the dynamic between DaouOffroad so grown up and so delicious lol. Their meet cute was sexually charged and the chemistry was off the meter. I gasped when Pheem got behind Than to restrain him but then of course Than flipped things around. So that could be an indicator for some vers?
I do see that Pheem's sexual attraction to Than is definitely more obvious and he seems very deliberate in the way he speaks to Than, very flirtatious already. He's not hiding anything and he's very forward. I'm sure we're going to see him start making advances soon.
Than def seems a bit more shy about his attraction. Giggling and blushing in secret like a maiden but acting all tough and defiant when he's with Pheem. It's fun to see the typical dynamic flipped with the big one being all shy and the little one being more...assertive.
I'd love to see a solid change in position with DaouOffroad. I know they're both down to switch things up but is the BL community ready to see that? You know how some of these fans are friend. We're going to get the old, "Daou is too masculine to bottom and Offroad is too feminine to top" argument. Even though they've both expressed that how they looks means absolutely nothing when it comes to intimacy.
I'm rooting for a switch up tbh but I would understand if the showrunners want to stick to the already established positions.
We can at the very least enjoy the switch in character dynamics. I'm glad that Offroad isn't going to be playing the sunshine-y character he's always playing. Glad we'll get to see him play someone who's cold, and mean, calculating, and vengeful. I can't wait to see what kind of No-Good Pheem gets up to.
And Daou gets to continue to play the hero but will the hero turn into a morally gray protector for Pheem????? I'm so excited to see where things go and if Than will be willing to possibly deceive people and break the law for Pheem.
LET'S FUCKING GO DAOUOFFROAD!
It really looked like The Wicked Game was going to go all in and do a full Jack and Joker but turns out it was secretly a Laws of Attraction all along
It's all about how Pheem looks at Than as they grow closer.
This might as well have been a different life for both of them.
Using the moves from your fuckbuddy on your new boyfriend is a choice.
Oh, nothing is going to get better from this kiss... but it is a very good kiss.
