The Temple of Zeus in the archaeological site of Olympus, Greece, once housed a colossal 12-meter gold-and-ivory image of Zeus by Athenian sculptor Pheidias. The statue (435 BC) was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Hermes Propylaios

Herm fragment by Alkamenes, 450 B.C.

Variation of Hermes Propylaios, the herm which according to Pausanias stood in the south wing of the Propylaia (stairway to the Acropolis of Athens). The original work created around 430 BC is attributed to the sculptor Alcamenes, pupil and collaborator of Pheidias.

Workshop of Pheidias in Ancient Olympia Restored

Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has approved the restoration of the workshop of iconic ancient sculptor Pheidias in Ancient Olympia.

Pheidias, who lived from approximately 480 to 430 BC, who was also a painter and architect, is the creator of the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The brilliant polymath also designed the statues of the goddess Athena Parthenos inside the Parthenon on the Acropolis, and the Athena Promachos, a colossal bronze at the Propylaea.

The restoration of the workshop of Pheidias, which later was transformed into the Early Christian Basilica of Olympia, was approved by the KAS as part of the program to highlight the Roman phase of the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia.
