Lettering in Law

A new pre-law fraternity brings together students to pursue their interest in legal careers.

UChicago’s newest fraternity allows students interested in law to learn about possible careers and network with alumni and other chapters. 

“[Phi Alpha Delta] seemed like the perfect source to learn from current law school students and current lawyers, who we will become connected with, about what it's like to attend law school and to practice law,” said one fraternity member. “I would prefer to know if a career in law would suit me before I invest in law school, and possibly get a sense of what type of law I would be interested in practicing.”

PAD Holds 61st Biennial Convention & Leadership Conference

At Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Raymond Tony Chang Jr. leads a balanced academic life, studying business and competing as a varsity sprinter on the school’s track and field team. Additionally, Raymond Tony Chang Jr. maintains memberships in several organizations, including the Cornell chapter of the Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) law fraternity. As the world’s largest legal fraternity, PAD oversees a variety of programs and activities that support and advance the work of students, schools, and legal professionals. Recently, the organization wrapped up its 61st Biennial Convention & National Leadership Conference, which was held August 3-7, 2016, in Washington, DC. PAD student and alumni members from around the globe attended the five-day event to elect international officers and help plan PAD’s future programs. Outside of the business activities, attendees had the opportunity to network with fellow PAD members and take part in workshops, presentations, and other educational sessions on various topics.   PAD’s 61st Biennial Convention & National Conference also served to recognize the recipients of the 2015-2016 PAD Law & Alumni Awards, which recognize PAD chapters and members for their outstanding achievements.

Mock Trial

   As another Phi Alpha Delta National Conference approaches, our very own chapter’s mock trial team prepares to compete in the tournament held in conjunction with our national event. One of the more exciting events at the conference, mock trial involves a team of students who examine and analyze how best to approach a case, either designating certain team members as exclusively lawyers and witnesses, or alternating within rounds. Most of the trial is pre-arranged based on the role given each round, each team is judged by their execution throughout. Preparation involves in-depth analysis of the given case, writing closing and opening statements which are later mostly learned by memory, and then practice rounds within our own chapter’s teams. Chapter advisor and practicing attorney Juan Saíz runs the mock trial and advocates it as a great way to learn trial advocacy skills.

    The Nationals tournament case is a rather fascinating case, involving a kidnapping, rituals and a suspected cult. Our mock trial team must collectively dissect the statement of facts, and understand the statutes being violated. While the sequence of events occurs in the fictional setting of “Padland”, the trial bases its violations on real legal statutes and also requires participating attorneys to use rules of evidence to introduce to the judge to be utilized as proof for their particular side of the trial. Mock trial chairman Kabil Afzali is responsible for organizing our group of budding litigators into champions this coming Halloween weekend. Last year, our dedicated team won second place in D.C. and this year, seek to take nothing less than first. Nationals Preview !

The Phi Alpha Delta National Conference and Mock Trial Competition is rapidly approaching! The conference will be next week Oct. 28th through November 1st at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington D.C. Those of you attending the conference will have the opportunity to meet and network with brothers that are in other chapters from different parts of the country. There will also be the opportunity to further the sense of brotherhood and create bonds with other members of our chapter, as we will be rooming a few nights together.

The conference it self will have several keynote speakers and workshops that can teach you a lot; there will also be a law school expo that will include over 40 law schools! That list will include George Washington Law, Florida State University Law, Stetson Law, Louisiana State University Law, Penn State Law, and many more! This will be a great opportunity to network with admissions officers, ask them questions, and learn information about different schools. Don't worry there is also a fun side! There will be a welcoming event and a Halloween dance & costume contest! Also, there will be plenty of time to roam the city to do some sight-seeing, take pictures, and who knows, maybe even meet the president.

You should start packing if you haven't done so already! The weather is estimated to be between the mid 60s all the way to lows in the mid 40s. Pack lightly but don't forget to bring some winter gear! Get ready, get excited! It's going to be a trip to remember!
