Shouldn’t Have Surrendered

Prompt: Surrender Requested by: @cyn-1998 for @badthingshappenbingo Fandom: Marvel Characters: Phil Johnson (OC), Natalie Barton (OC), Matthew Ward (OC) Wordcount: 404 Warnings: None I can think of??? Maybe some self-hatred sprinkled in for flavor.

     Matthew had outdone himself this time. They'd been fighting through the base for at least two hours, and they’d been having way too many close calls to be comfortable. Phil was starting to run low on ammo, not to mention he was beginning to tire out. Endurance wasn't the tech expert's specialty, after all.

     Phil's gaze flicked over to Natalie, an apology that he couldn't say in them. He dropped his gun and held his hands up in surrender. Hydra agents grabbed his arms and pulled them behind his back almost instantly, forcing his body downward. He gasped in pain, but he couldn't look to see if Natalie had done the same, not struggling as he was dragged off into another part of the base. The cuffs they locked onto his wrists were lined with rubber, neutralizing his powers, and he craned his head to look for Natalie. Then he saw her, with zip ties digging into her wrists. He winced at the look she gave him and turned his head away. As they went deeper in the base, a blindfold was forced on each of them, and Phil's breaths became shallow and sharp in his panic. At least Matthew was likely to slip up, do something wrong. He always did. But so far he had done everything right, and Phil had to wonder if he had made a mistake in surrendering.

     They were taken to a block of cells and pushed into cells on separate sides. Cutting them off from communication, even by signing. Matthew had finally done his homework. The thought made his stomach flip. He got them into this mess, he had to get them out. He knew no one would be coming for them. They had no extraction plan. They were considered professionals in their field, but… they were just kids. He was barely nineteen, and he ranked higher than most agents in their mid-twenties, because of what? The fact that he could survive a few thousand volts constantly coursing through his body? It wasn't fair, not to anyone.

     When he finally heard footsteps, he dared to hope it was one of the team. The door of the cell opened, and he was about to speak when a fist tightened into his hair.

     Matthew's voice was a cold growl in his ear, a promise of pain before he and Natalie escaped - if they even could. "You shouldn't have surrendered, Phil."

(Belated!) Dream Journal 2019-06-07: A Clown Pirate Brass Band Is Involved And Honestly It Was Pretty Cool

This dream didn’t get posted at it’s usual time because my D&D game ran way longer than anticipated. Lots of other little fragments were involved that made almost no sense, and if I didn’t scribble some cryptic sentences in my notes app, I would have forgotten them completely. Behold:

I bought a set of Adventuring Dice, which are regular cube shaped dice that somehow tell you a story with numeric codes. I have zero idea how they work, but I spent a lot of time tossing them around and chanting “Roll for story! Roll for story!”

A placeholder person named Evan McAllister is a famous spelunker who drives around in a white van and sells secondhand guns to known cannibals. I’m sure there is a story buried here, but it is lost to me at this time.

Phil Johnson, creator of the Under The Crossbones podcast, makes another cameo in my dream journal (sort of) when I showed up to work at a community theatre as a lighting technician. A troupe of brightly-colored clowns in pirate regalia and big shoes took the stage, armed with trombones. Breakdancing and beatboxing was also involved, and it was the coolest, most unique performance I had seen in a long time. Their performance was so unique that I found their booking agent backstage and got contact information for the band, specifically so I could relay it to Phil to include them on his podcast.

But there is a problem with writing down contact information in dreams: it doesn’t work when you wake up.

Because the Gospel itself is what is at stake and Scripture commands us to stand against error like that and confront it. And all of church history affirms that real Scriptural heroes are never those who follow the flow of compromise. They are always men like Paul, who refused to tolerate any deviation from the pure Gospel. Men like Athanasius who stood against the whole world. And men like Martin Luther that nailed his challenge to the church door. May we be men like then and may God give us the courage to stand.
