Blackout in Phnon Penh
Another fucking blackout. That's two in the last 2 hours - what the fuck is wrong with this place. I collect my thoughts, scramble around in the dark and amble on down 3 flights of steps to the restaurant slash shit hole.
There's a bookshelf and I grab a novel, a table and a bottle of beer. Thankfully they have set up some candles and I can wind down with this book by candlelight - it might as well be fucking Valentines!
A steady flow of bewildered guests come down the stairs their expressions screaming: "who turned the lights out?"
The tables are few and far between - I don't mind sharing but a headache and a lack of sleep mean I'm not in the mood for idle travel chit-chat.
A tall lanky American comes over with a smile that reeks of: "Hi, I'm Chad, I see we are in a similar situation and I thought we could exchange a yarn, have a few beers and while away the fucking hours?"
Now I'm usually a lad who's up for that type of jibe but not tonight. Before he can open his mouth I return his smile with a hint of: "I'm smiling because if I wasn't I would be massacring everyone in sight starting with you and whilst we share a common problem that's all we are going to be sharing, so sod off!"
Of course he reads this as "pull up a chair and let's exchange our favourite colours" and immediately starts dribbling on about something. I calmly close my book, calm before the storm kinda calm. Then magically the lights come on. You survive this time Chad.
I excuse myself and drag my weary body up 3 flights of stairs to my room. As I put the key in the door the lights go out.
Chad is going to die.
