Female Daurian Redstart (Phoenicurus auroreus) Once seen only in winter, breeding records within the country have increased. Breeding was first confirmed in Karuizawa in 2017, and it is now commonplace to see them in summer too. The English name ‘Daurian Redstart’ derives from the region of eastern Russia, “Dauria”, in the first part, while the latter part, ‘start’, appears to be an old name for the tail feathers.

The red-tails (Phoenicurus) are a genus of birds with around eleven species that belong to the blackbirds. The name is derived from the rusty to reddish-brown coloration of the tail, which occurs in all species of the genus. The best-known representatives in Central Europe are the common redstart and the black redstart.
