FRIENDS IN AZ: HELP DEFUND THE PHX POLICE
I'm encouraging all of my friends in Arizona to follow the link below to send an email to Mayor Gallego and our Council members who are on the Public Safety and Justice subcommittees regarding the proposed 2020-2021 budget. There is going to be a city council meeting regarding it tomorrow, and last week there were so many comments and people speaking against the budget proposals that they postponed the discussion again for tomorrow. We are asking that they revise their proposed budget of over $900million for ‘public safety’ in favor of reallocating funds for community development and community enrichment (which only have proposed funds of around $25million each). It’s really important now more than ever that we defund the police and take care of people instead. This link below will take you to your email and it will autofill the people it needs to get sent to, and fill out the letter in the email body, all you have to do is sign your name at the end and hit send. If you do so, please also send this to your friends, and encourage them to send it to their friends so we can get as many sent as we can. Pouring more money into our police force is only going to hurt queer communities and communities of color. We need to invest in our community instead. We need to demand something new.

The local organization Poder in Action also has some helpful resources up in the interest of defunding the police. Please send your message via this link:

I am also asking that everyone leave a comment on the City Council Formal Meeting agendas for the proposed budget, as these comments will go on public record. If you haven’t already, you can sign up and then leave your comment on these four pages (just copy and paste the same comment) It only has to be 500 characters or less, and should say something to the effect of this:
“I strongly oppose the proposed $944,680,555 for our public safety department for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Our community is asking that you instead increase the proposed $24,760,742 and $26,837,014 budgets for community development and community enrichment. We must prioritize healing and growth in our community over further militarization of our police force. It's time to focus on sustainable communities, justice, and dismantling systematic oppression and police brutality.”

Help protect Black Lives by defunding the police
Out in PHX again today. Notable experience was one community relations officer who refused to admit the Phoenix PD has a police violence problem. Remember that Phoenix PD is ranked 3rd in police killings per citizen in the country, and 2nd in overall number of police killings in 2019.

Phoenix police officers knelt with protesters who chanted “take a knee” during a peaceful demonstration over the death of George Floyd befor
Hey friends want a cool story??
Well you won’t find it here. Because this is 100% spin. I was there, and they did not spontaneously kneel. This was a negotiated deal to calm the crowd enough that they’d leave and the cops didn’t have to do the paperwork for arrests. Now Toni Williams wants to call it cooperation?? Pure fiction. They did not offer and they had to be coerced.
My stellar street medic friend Ashley Cuber made that comment they quoted next to me. The only thing she though was ‘incredible’ is that the protesters who were cornered & trapped with minutes before curfew and threatening to break it all got out of there safely. Because she’s a medic. She was not referring to any heartfelt feelings for the sympathetic kneeling because there wasn’t any. It was purely performative. The protesters got a little victory and the PD got to go home sooner. That’s it. Not one has knelt since.
Fox News is lying. Read this story instead. THIS is reality.

Is Firing an Officer Enough?
Is Firing an Officer Enough?
A quick google search of “fired officers” will result in a plethora of stories in which departments were left with no other choice but to terminate an employee. Well, maybe the police administration could have taken less drastic matters, however, firing they believed, was the best option. Most notably is recent the termination of the Phoenix PD Officer Chris Meyer. He lost his job for his actions…

PHX Police Chief responds to shoplifting incident
A Phoenix police disciplinary review board has recommended demotion for the sergeant who fatally shot a mentally ill woman in August 2014, according to a department statement released Tuesday. Phoenix police have said they went to Michelle Cusseaux’s apartment near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road with a court order to take her to a mental health facility. When officers entered her apartment, police said Cusseaux threatened them with a hammer, and Sgt. Percy Dupra fatally shot her.
