I thought that too but idk I think something else is going on. I had him in a party with Sera early on and she says something to him about how he’s not really talking to anyone or opening up??? Something along those lines.

Varric is a known liar, so I figure he’s distancing himself from Anders for safety/convenience. Or cuz he’s closed off about it. IDK. But they definitely were close. Varric shows a lot of concern for Anders in act 3 when he starts losing his humor.

Yeah he still sounded upset but also a bit mournful but maybe I’m remembering it wrong cause I loved Anders so much and I just want people to not hate him.

I thought so too. I kind of read the DAI lines as Varric feeling very betrayed and not knowing how to process it. I also romanced/spared Anders so I thought part of it was blaming him for hurting Hawke. I’ve thought… extensively about this.
thank yall. i reallllly just want it to be him not wanting to talk/think about it too much. i do think that part of varric maybe blames anders for some of the chaos and death, and was probably initially frustrated bc he was ‘forced’ into action (remember how varric viewed himself in the beginning as more or less a coward who turns away from hardships and responsibility. omg i have so many thoughts about how past!varric might have resented choosing sides and making tough decisions because it forces him out of his comfort zone and into shit that he cant hand-wave away in ambiguous terms. but i wont get into that bc i might just be projecting )
but another (larger i hope) part still deeply cares for anders and therefore feels really betrayed. remember hawke isnt the only one that anders didnt tell about his plan. i feel like he probably took that chantry news just as hard, esp if they got along as well as i think they did. so looking at the situation from there its possible that varric just feels very ambivalent towards anders at the moment. and maybe hasnt even worked out all of his feelings yet?
i just cant understand why the writing in inquisition makes him seem more bitter than just a really concerned and hurt friend
