Leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) have wildly flamboyant appendages that are perfect for camouflage (less great for swimming fast—so that camouflage comes in handy). #VisitorPicture by @big_blunty #regram #seadragon #Leafyseadragon #Phycoduruseques #camo #camouflage #beautiful #photography #animalphotography #newenglandaquarium #boston #massachusetts (at New England Aquarium)
A Leafy Seadragon - Up Close! • This is a #repost from @timtast1c via @PhotoAroundApp The Leafy Seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is native to the cool waters of Southern Australia where kelp-like protrusions aid the fish in camouflage. The fish's small pectoral fins near the head and a dorsal fin propel the fish through the water with as much grace as seaweed! Related to sea horses, these belong to the family Syngnathidae. While not currently on display, biologists are closely working behind the scenes with these fish to better crack the code on their reproduction. Their close relatives, Weedy sea dragons are on display in water planet! #leafyseadragon #syngnathidae #phycoduruseques #seadragon #calacademy #LeafySeaDragonVideo https://www.instagram.com/p/B87C0OEAtR7/?igshid=1mk5yliy9cri

This #weedyseadragon at the #sheddaquarium has freshly laid eggs on the underside of his tail! Similar to seahorses, all of the egg care in this species is paternal. At three days old, they’re pink - right before the young hatch, they’ll turn orange or purple. #phycoduruseques #aquarium #fatherhood #paternal (at Shedd Aquarium)
