Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Dreadnought
Art by Pete Venters
What is a Dreadnought (flavorfully)?
Nobody knows. Seriously. It’s a big spikey thing maybe. Look at the picture above. That’s it. That’s the Dreadnought. The real would means particularly large battleship, but that doesn’t translate to Magic’s usage of it.
What is a Dreadnought (mechanically)?
Phyrexian Dreadnought is a 12/12 creature for 1 mana with “Trample” and “When Phyrexian Dreadnought enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you sacrifice any number of creatures with total power 12 or greater.” This is the only Dreadnought
Can I make a Dreadnought deck?
There is only one Dreadnought.
Is Dreadnought a good creature type?
We have another contender for worst creature type ever here. It’s one card, it’s not a token, it could have easily been not a Dreadnought, and Dreadnought probably isn’t even the best term for it. The Dreadnought creature type does literally nothing. It’s a wasted type of the highest magnitude. It’s not even one of those token-only types that are basically meaningless. This card could’ve been a Construct or an Insect or a Wurm. I feel stupider for knowing that Phyrexian Dreadnought has its own, unique creature type.
This is why we should’ve had a Phyrexian type to begin with.

The decks in this Legacy tournament from years gone by were indeed thought-provoking. It was filled with some of the coolest decks from Magic’s history, decks that are all but extinct in today’s metagame.…

Detonate + Phyrexian Dreadnought. Sure, you can go to the Dreadnought and make it explode, but the explosion is so disappointing...
