The Pian del Re Nature Reserve is well known among the Piedmontese and the neighbouring French but somehow hasn't quite reached international recognition. Covering an area of about 465 hectares where the River Po originates, the Pian del Re is a spectacularly lush plateau located 100km west of Turin and 7km upstream from the Crissolo ski resort. It's undeniably a place of paradise for those seeking peace and quiet by the lakes nestled among the blooming mountain flowers in the summer, away from the oppressive humidity down in the Turin plain that hits you so hard. I took this photo while on my hike up from Pian della Regina, and the mountain scenery was absolutely fabulous. Here I captured the Monviso group of mountains with four noticeable peaks; working from left to right there's Punta Sella, Monviso (the highest peak), Visolotto and Punta Due Dita. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Amazingly, you can get to Pian del Re by public transport! Ideally it's best to visit Monviso at the start or end of the peak season, i.e. at the end of June or the start of September, as only minibuses are allowed to reach Pian del Re due to the challenging hairpin turns and narrow roads. I'd recommend taking a bus from Saluzzo ('BusCompany') to Barge or Paesana and then take the shuttle bus to Crissolo where there'll be a minibus departing for Pian del Re.
