Ok, so I gotta say, I don’t understand what’s up with all the hate for the new Pan adaptation coming out this year, honestly I think it looks like the best one since Hook, and it definitely looks like a better origin story then that crappy Neverland miniseries.
And I know a majority of that hate is aimed towards belief that the movie makers are being racist by not hiring Native American actors to play Tiger Lily and the rest of the Piccaninny tribe.
But here’s the thing, the Piccaninny aren’t really native american’s, their native Neverlanders. And encase you’ve all forgotten, every version of the Piccaninny to date, including the versions in the original story are basically horribly stereotypical Indian caricatures. Which really is understandable considering when the story was originally written, that view being the norm at the time.
But really that doesn’t excuse us from using the same stereotype in every adaptation just because that’s how it was in the original story. The original cartoon movie is a classic so nobody faults it, plus it was the times as well.
But every adaptation after that, especially more modern versions, the majority of the hate they get is how racist and stereotypical the Piccaninny are.
And what are the two most popular adaptations of the Peter Pan story? In my views those spots belong to Hook, understandably, and the aspects of it in Once Upon a Time. And what do those two have in common? The Piccaninny aren’t in either one at all, so there’s no possibility of anything coming off as racist.
Honestly, I think the creators of Pan are doing the best thing that could of ever been done to the Piccaninny, and personally I hope this version is the standard going forward. I mean, in no way do they resemble Stereotypical Native Americans. I mean, the bright rainbow colors, the puffy cotton like balls, the multicolored yarn, everything about it is so different and out there. It’s great if you ask me, and also once again, in no way stereotypical Native American.
And before anyone says, ok, those changes are great, but couldn’t they of still cast Native American actors? Well, basically no. If they’d of cast Native American actors in these versions of the Picaninny they would of gotten just as much hate as they’re getting now for the reason of making fun of Native Americans by making them all ridiculous and over the top.
So honestly in closing, I feel hollywood made the perfect decisions regarding the Piccaninny for once and really hope some of you out there come to realize this, cause honestly we need this version in all upcoming adaptations and not another brown dress, head dress wearing girl dancing around a teepee.
