Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle (丹戎禺云吞面) used to operate a hole in the wall outlet under the escalator in the basement of Sembawang Shopping Centre. It had become mum’s favourite noodles stall until it closed.

While mum enjoyed the Classic Wanton Noodles 🍜 notable for its springy thin yellow noodles, boiled & fried wantons plus char siu mixed in ketchup-based sauce. I much preferred the dry style Dumpling Noodles, served with a bowl of pork & shrimp dumplings 🥟 soup.

Mum enjoyed the noodles at Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle (丹戎禺雲吞面) in Sembawang Shopping Centre so we are back again today. We had the exact same dishes as per the other day. Mum’s Classic Wanton Noodles (S$4.50) came with wantons in both soup and deep-fried forms while my Dumpling Noodles (S$5.50) had dumplings in the bowl of soup. The ketchup-based sauce served to highlight the springy noodles with tangy and savoury sweet notes.

I often see people eating noodles at this hole in the wall stall located underneath the escalator at the basement of Sembawang Shopping Centre. Happened today that we couldn’t decide what to eat, so might as well try out Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle (丹戎禺雲吞面) for a change.

Mum had the Classic Wanton Noodles (S$4.50) while I got myself the Dumpling Noodles (S$5.50). Both the noodles are dry style with a bowl of soup each and we opted for thin yellow noodles. The portions in my opinion are on the small side. Tucking in, the mee kia (幼面) are springy and savoury with the coating of the ketchup-based sauce. The succulent dumplings are filled with crunchy prawns, minced pork and chives. My dish doesn’t come with char siu which is classic ingredient in wanton noodles. Mum said she really enjoyed the dinner tonight. While I do agree with her, the portion is not filling enough for me so I had to look for more food elsewhere.

For today’s Breakfast, both sis and I opted for Vegetarian Food. Sis got her fried bee hoon (rice vermicelli) with mock char siu. Also included are both pickled green chilli and red chilli paste. Mum went overboard and picked for me four vegetarian dishes of curry mutton & potato, stewed knotted bean curd skin and sweet & sour pork with a crispy vegetable fritter.

Mum herself went for the Mee Tai Bak Soup (米苔目汤) or 老鼠粉 as some would call it because of the shape of the noodle which is tapered like a mouse tail. Comes with pork slices, minced pork, pig’s livers, fishcake slices and lettuces.

A meal of Vegetarian Fried Kway Teow (炒粿條) or flat rice noodles with curry mock mutton & potato 🥔, spicy imitation squids 🦑 and omelette 🍳. Served with pickled green chillies and chilli sauce at the side.

Sis’s Vegetarian Kway Teow (flat rice noodles) with mock pig’s offal (kidney & intestine) and char siew made from flour. Also included are some pickled green chilli 🌶 and chilli sauce.

As for me, my Vegetarian Rice (斋饭) has braised fried bean curd skin, a deep-fried “chicken drumstick” 🍗 made from bean curd skin wrapped around a wooden ice cream stick and curry mock mutton with potato. 🥔

Today I pickled chillis with lemon and five spice and other delicious smelling things that make me want to drink the brine every time I make it!
