This Land focuses on work made throughout the United States within the past decade. The photographers assembled here examine aspects of the country’s current social climate, from the mundane to the politicized.
Spent this afternoon seeing the current show, This Land, at Pier 24 — it is really a good one. For me the highlight is Street - an hour long (!) video installation by James Nares. A compilation of three minutes of high-definition footage of people on the streets of New York is slowed down to 60 minutes. The effect is dazzling. It feels like painting after painting, a modern version of those epic, massive scenes where sometimes a figure stares out you, the kind of paintings where the eyes follow you around the room. You can get a preview of the piece here. But it really needs to be seen on a bigger screen in a nice dark screening room. I plan to go back and take it all in at some point.
