I patted Ellis’s leg in a way that was probably not reassuring. We sat in silence until the nurse came and kicked me out. Or tried to kick me out. Ellis refused to move his legs. I had to pry them off and extract myself from the bed in an awkward and complicated manoeuvre that made the nurse raise his eyebrow at me.
