It's impressive this snake even saw the light of day. Sometimes, mother snakes eat "bad" eggs called "slugs" after laying them, Penning said. Moreover, snakes born with deformities, such as spinal problems, typically die after a few days, he said.

Even more surprising is that the eye appeared to work. "Deformities rarely lead to normal operating functions," Penning said. "When you think of the complexity involved within the skull and nervous tissue, there is so much more going on here than just that one new eye." For instance, it's likely that this third eye would need a third optic nerve, which would certainly complicate the brain's typical layout, he said.

Eyes On The Sky

Many animals possess light-sensing “eyes” in addition to their common image-forming eyes. Pineal eyes and ocelli are two types of “third eye” that evolved independently of one another but help an animal sense overhead light.

Pineal Eyes

Some vertebrates (notably lizards, amphibians, and fish) have a simple light-sensing organ called a pineal eye, sometimes also called a parietal eye or a third eye. It is covered by a layer of skin, though in some species it is visible as a slight gray spot on the midline between or behind the eyes.

The pineal eye relays signals to the pineal gland, which produces hormones. Together they respond to light signals to regulate wake/sleep patterns, body temperature, and seasonal cycles.

Ocelli

An ocellus (literally “little eye”) is a light-sensing organ found on the heads of many insects. Most species have a cluster of three ocelli in a triangular shape on the top of their heads. Ocelli complexity varies based on insect type, but there is evidence that while ocelli cannot form clear images like normal eyes do, they may be able to perceive some spacial depth in low resolution.

Why have ocelli? Ocelli can send signals much faster than normal eyes, providing the animal with constant information about its orientation. For example, a flying insect could determine the pitch of its turn is based on which of its three ocelli suddenly detect more or less light, then decide to level out or turn more steeply – all before their normal eyes relay any images.

I spent tonight covering the dragon's base in 23kt gold leaf and glazing over the leaf leaf with acrylic. I'm not totally done with the base, it's pretty on its own but not quite tied in enough with the bust just yet. I should be done with the base by tomorrow, and after the piece gets some studio shots, he'll be up in my shop on Wednesday. For now have some random images, including a shot of his pineal eye. Since beardies have them and all, I knew my bearded dragon-inspired dragon sculpt had to have one, too!
