It is Lunar New Year, and every household stocked up some new year snacks for own consumption or to treat other family members, friends and colleagues when they visit. Likewise, we have Pineapple Tarts (黄梨挞), which featured a buttery crust with tangy sweet pineapple jam 🍍 in the centre. Unlike Bak Kwa (肉干), that is available year-round, pineapple tarts 🍍🧆 are only sold during the Chinese New Year period.
This year we also bought some Mixed Nuts Chips and Cuttlefish Seaweed Rolls 🦑 for variety. The balls of Buckwheat Rice Puffs are made from buckwheat grains 🌾 (荞麦) and Chinese yam 🥔 (山药/淮山). The rice puffs are very crispy and only slightly sweet so compared to other Chinese New Year goodies, it more of a healthy snack.
Traditionally, Pineapple Tarts (黄梨挞) come open-faced with a ball of pineapple jam 🍍 sitting in the centre of the buttery 🧈 pastry. These days, it can be in any shapes or forms like ball (sphere), pillow (tube) or cute animals or flowers designs etc… The snacks are made to be eaten in one mouthful as the crumbly pastry tended to fall everywhere.
